Help - camel shooting

Post by juststarting » 13 Feb 2018, 11:36 pm

Hi All

On a back of a different thread, I probably should start a separate one...

Would really love some help with camel shooting. I imagine it's not really hunting that I am used to, but I am just guessing. Anyway, I am in Melbourne. Had a thought that I should give it a go (seems yum), so wondering if anyone could help with advice, point me in the right direction, how, where, when and what not. I have no idea where to start and last time I tried, I was, well, anyway, they don't let me in the Zoo anymore.

Feel free to DM.

Thanks!

Your closest camels are probably in the Simpson desert.I have seen them in the Gibson and Great Sandy. The pros shoot them in the knees then go back later to finish them off with .223 which I think is cruel. If I was to do it for sport/food I would hit them in the boiler room with my 7mm Rem Mag.Apparently they are good eating

My brother in law works out in the Western deserts and is called upon from time to time by some of the communities out there to cull problem camels.
He just uses a .32-20 and brain shoots them, although he says that a well placed heart shot takes them down as well. They are not as tough as some would think.
They do a lot of damage to water supply points and the bulls can get quite aggressive.

Yep my neighbor goes west of the curry a couple times a year and uses a .243.
JS's selection of .30 cals will do the job.
Ps under the hump is an huge slab of meat that my neighbor reckons is the best eatin. :drinks:

That's his old Marlin he's been going bush with since late '80's and he does know how to use it.

Curtain Springs on the road to Ayres Rock. Takes out trophy shooters from time to time.

Did survey in 2008 over a million along the SA/NT border and into WA and Qld increasing at 100,000 a year.
They did contract shoot 100,000 but the pollies seemed to pat themselves on the back and walk away.

Camels destroy, sandlewood, limebushes, quandong etc. Turn scrub into sandy desert. They caused $250 K damage to infrastructure (fences and trap yards) on Andodo station.

I used 243 & 308. Well placed heart shot drops em. Go out and kill em all.

I think I'll be ok for rifles and gear. More interested in where, when, who, contacts, websites...

I think I'll be ok for guns, but you know, 300WM may be needed

I would suggest .243 with a 100gn pill as minimum for body shots for confidence in dropping on the spot so 308 and anything similar will do it well.I am with P3seven go get em all.

You may need 2 or 3 rifles as they get hot when amongst a big mob. You have to watch weather with recent rain they will disperse. Dry times they can congregate into mobs of 15,000 or more.

The Aboriginal APY Lands on north west SA is the place to go. Contact the head of the Rangers and mabye they will invite you.. Out there they have the glow in the dark ones that graze around Maralinga..

The cattle properties on the east side of the Stuart highway north of Coober Pedy may let you on.

Camel shooting is usually a team effort. With very strong, long range 4WD vehicles.

Have wanted to hunt camels ever since seeing them in the hundreds near Yalata a couple years back, protected indigenous land with strict no firearms allowed.
Still dreaming of chomping down on a fred flinstone sized ribeye.

G’Day JS
Not really hunting more shooting, distance is too great for walking. Camels walk faster than you can run. I have shot hundreds of them and it's generally opportunity shots.
If you get onto a mob and you can drop the lead they will often mill around and we have shot the entire mob at times.
Minimum .30 Cal. Generally you can drive to about 150 metres if they haven't been shot at before. If they have been then as soon as they sight you they are off, even a flash of light from a windscreen is enough too spook camels we use cruisers because of the flat windscreen to minimise the chance of a sun flash.
About May June is breeding season and the bulls get stroppy, I once was charged and put 3, 250 Gn accubonds into the chest and each time he got up, when we opened him up heart lung was soup and one shoulder smashed. Bull camels have big tusks they use to fight and pull down branches to eat.
They are good eating much like beef only a little milder in flavour.
I will try to post some pics.

Re: Help - camel shooting

Post by Squiddy » 27 Feb 2018, 4:57 pm

Just saw this thread, been off the forum for 12 months. Used to work out in the Great Victorian Desert for a mining company, there are a ridiculous amount of Camels around Laverton and North East of Kalgoorlie towards Plumridge Lakes. The only issue is access - this is one of the most remote parts of Australia and you really need a 4WD kitted with all the breakout gear for sand and free wheeling hubs, not to mention equipment. I used to work in Exploration so we had our own food, water, fuel, sat comms gear and medical supplies.

I used to see professional shooters out there from time to time with portable cool rooms to take back dog meat. I've attached some pics from around 2011, you probably wouldn't get closer than 75m on a good day. They're bigger than the photos make them appear too!

Head shots just about anything from .243 up will do. Body shots I am inclined to say heavier is better - minimum of .308 with good bullets.

While pro shooters and those with experience can drop them with a .222 its not something I would recommend to those with little or no experience.

Sounds like another candidate for the good old 45-70!

I wouldn't mind having a crack, and out here in far West NSW I'm probably not too far away either.

I watched a show (can’t remember name now) on YouTube talking about camels, apparently they are really nice eating. In this show old mate BBQ up some camel and the punters thought it was good beef. Would love to have a go at them and see.
