Sambar hunting 7mm RM vs 30-06

Post by Cool » 11 Mar 2018, 9:16 pm

Hi All,

I would like to get some thoughts from experts here. my question is if you are buying new rifle for Sambar hunting mostly "Stalking"

Assuming both have Muzzle break for less recoil.(optional)
Which rifle you choose out of two. 3006 or 7 mm Rem Mag.
What Barrel lenght you preffer
which projectile
Why

Stalking in Vic, both will do the job just fine, in fact more than enough. Anything in legal bullet weight will be plenty. Perhaps focus on rifle weight, you'll be lugging that around up and down.

Muzzle breaks are a moot point - it's off hand shooting, so you won't feel the recoil that much anyway.

30-06 with 180g pill no need for a brake ....... and as juststarting said its more about weight as you will lugging it up and down gully's 99.9% of the time

Long shots over gullies 7mm rem mag all day

Closer shots in areas of less visibility 30-06 all day.

I have a Remington Sendero in 7mm Rem Mag and 175gn Wincheser fail safe or Remington core-lokt will do the job.Its personal choice as I have shot a mates 30/06 and it did big goats real good.

Thanks all for responding with valuable information. Don’t you think 7mm RM has edge over 3006 since it can also be used for long range hunting. As long as its not heavy e.g. T3

If your recoil shy don't buy a 7mmRM. Get a 30-06.

I have an 06. But yes I think the 7mm rem mag has a slight edge over the 06 for effectiveness but there's more to consider than that.

factory ammo cost is more expensive. 30cal has more choice and often cheaper projectiles.Barrel usually needs to be a couple inches longer there's plusses and minuses.

7mm keeps its energy longer due to higher BC.

The benefit of the 06 is if wanted you can run heavier projectiles... Not that you really need more than 175g which would be my pick in 7mm rem mag for Sambar.

Under 250m there's much of a muchness so there's a strong case for the 06 for cost, little bit lighter, shorter maybe heavier projectiles

From 250-400m I'd be picking the 7mm. Flatter, more energy

Also as far as recoil goes... My light 06 22". Does 178g at 2750 with 56.5 grains. A 22" rem mag throwing 175g at about 2750 with only slightly more powder.

Up that end they all recoil allot.

i probably wont get the chance to hunt sambar, but a mate of mine has a tikka lite in 300 win mag . sure kicks a bit but pretty light to carry round. it would be my choice over the other two rounds. flat shooter with plenty of grunt

I would say the 30-06, bigger selection of bullets in 30 cal but either will do the same job. Ive owned both and enjoyed both , no need for a brake on either of them in my view but thats just me.

It’s sarcasm Dunc.
I have an affinity for the 06 that makes zero sense (maybe a previous life?), but If hunting was my only game I’d have a 7mm or 300wm any day of the week...
Chamberings can be matters of the “heart” more so than the head...probably why there are so many different ones available, eh?

After testing some reloads for my 270 Win I'd be hard pressed buying a 7mm RM or a 30-06 again.

Had no trouble getting 150gr BT upto 3100fps, really pleasant to shoot compared to the old 3006 with the 180gr off the bench.
