Shooting way worse with MAXBOX shooting rest

Post by Ariat » 05 Aug 2013, 9:35 am

Curious what everyone else's experience with these is... I've had the idea of getting a maxbox shooting rest floating around in the back of my mind for a while, these things...

I'd put off buying one because I thought $70 for bit of foam was a bit rich, but I was at the Little River shooting range on saturday and saw the rent them for $5 so gave it a go.

Long story short... Shooting at 50m metres, I shot two 5-shot groups with the maxbox which were about 2" each. Gave up with it and went back to the bipod, and the next two groups were cloverleaf.

I found with the maxbox I was way more unstable that just using regular old bipod.

So much for buying one of those.

I must say I'm not a fan of shooting with the rest in the middle of the rifle. Having the pivot point in the middle instead of at the front makes me a bit wobbly.

Bit flimsy for my liking.

Would rather be nestled down in a sandbag like the Caldwell one.

Bout $110 for one of those.

$110 filled that is. Cheaper if you buy an unfilled one I guess but haven't seen these bags being sold unfilled.

Same. I found that to be stable with it I had to basically just be holding the trigger and not really touching the rifle. Would rather have a heavy sandbag style setup like the Caldwell one you linked there.

Or just the trusty old bipod.

Sounds like you've got your winning setup right there.

IMO if you're getting cloverleaf groups with your bipod, no need muck around with other rests.

$60 or something for a piece of foam too... Better options for a fraction of the cost IMO...

What do you guys think of shooting off a back pack?

I've been using my gear bag lately and with all the stuff in their plus the material of the bag it provides a pretty good cushion for me.

I've used a MAXBOX door rest for a few years and it does the job just fine when spotlighting. If I'm shooting paper off a bench I use bags.

For what it's worth, seeing as this was posted 5 1/2 years ago [!!!!!], I know what the problem is. You're not using the MaxBox on a steel surface! I have one and have found it to be fantastic when used AS DESINGNED [that is, stuck to a steel bonnet or ute roof]. When you do that, they are very stable. I found the same thing when I used it on a concrete shooting bench - I thought they were wobbly, but believe me, when you STICK one to a bonnet they are very solid and as good as a benchrest for shooting. I have a swiveling bipod on my .223, so I can just use that, but the MaxBox offers another alternative, if needed.

I use the MAXBOX II and it’s awesome.
Yes $75 is a bit step for foam but it works.
