Something I've noticed at the shooting range

Just something I've noticed at the shooting range:

Most of the guys I'm shooting better than are the ones that spend all their time telling people how good they are, and what the other person is doing wrong.

Most of the guys I'm shooting worse than are the ones that have their head down and their mouth shut and are concentrating on shooting.

I wonder if that's a coincidence

I've developed a system where I bring an old target with me that has "5 shots 200 yards tikka .223 25.5 grn 2206H 69grn nosler" written on it and leave it on the table in direct view of those people wanting to offer unwanted advice.

The group is 1 ragged hole (actually shot at 100 yards). Seems to work a treat, I only pull it out when I see or hear those type of people coming. They just seem to glance over and keep walking.

You also get this in pistol shooting during smaller matches. Groups of 10 + usually shoot a stage together and in most, not all group there is usually someone who after a novice or newer shooter has finished takes that person aside and explains what they did wrong, how they could improve. If there is a minor dispute the second type of person comes forward to explain the rules of a shooting style, and their interpretation of the rules, the bush lawyer. Both these types have had minimal shooting experience and barely know any actual rules, in totality but the do insist on helping. All part of the day.

I won't lie. I felt incredibly smug when I was ringing steel at 180m with my .22lr and everyone around me was shooting paper with their .308s at 50-100m.

No one seemed to bother me.

Didn't have anyone coming over to teach my friend either, who was getting getting plenty of hits as well and is completely new to shooting.

180 mtrs steel, what size is the steel? You would almost have to elevate to the starts, or higher.

One should never loose sight of the fact that the best Olympic shooting coaches CAN"T out shoot their pupils !

The best NRL coaches can't play anymore !

One should never think that just because a person can't shoot better than you on paper that he knows less than you do.

That would be a very basic mistake a lot of younger people make . The old hands might be shaky now but the decades of shooting knowledge are still there .

However I do take your point about unsolicited advice while you are trying to load or concentrate on your own shooting . I know what you are talking about , it can be annoying . I even had a guy twist the micrometre on my dies without thinking what he was doing .

180 mtrs steel, what size is the steel? You would almost have to elevate to the starts, or higher.

It's about 230mm. According to my drop tables my elevation is 4.6 mils with a 100m zero. It was our first outing with "long-range" .22lr, I might get some video next time.

I thought that at 150 metres, 30 less than you are shooting the drop was over 10inches? Extremely good shooting for both of you at 180 mtrs, with a 23cm / 9" steel plate. No wonder they don't bother you.

4.6mils at 180m is 32 inches of drop. When I think about it it seems like a hell of a lot. The steel was about 1mil big in the scope so it didn't seem like a crazy feat at the time. I did spend hours on those drop tables so I guess it paid off.

Quick question what scope were you using or was it open sights????

SWFA SS 6x42 with MRAD turrets. It's a great scope for the money, but it was a huge pain getting my hands on one since we're not in America and all. It's mounted on a Savage Mk2 FV-SR.

Glad I never go to a range and put up with the stuff that goes on there. Easier just to go to the local state forest and bang away there. Just call it sighting in.
