Automatic fire group size

Someone was asking about this a while ago but I couldn't find the targets at the time to share a picture of.... Just found them.

Can't remember what old topic was so here's a new one for whoever was interested.

This is 2x 30 rounds magazines fired from an M4A1. First on 3 round burst, the second on full auto. Shot at about 30m

Ruler on there for some scale.

That's not bad!
When I started shooting my groups looked like that with my .22

Would be interesting to see that done with an M14 too.

The spread on this was my mostly my management of the recoil I'd say.

The first mag in 3 shot bursts are responsible for the tighter 2" or so above and around the red zone.

Should have posted the photo the other way but if you imagine it rotated clockwise you can see I drifted up and to the right. That was the automatic burst.

This was my first shot of the rifle and of the day. I know it's only 30m which isn't anything to get overly excited about but I got about 45 of 60 in a 6" circle which I think is pretty good

Uzi's are wild little things. The small size and in that underarm brace kind of position for shooting gets you flinging them up

For an automatic I'd take a carbine style rifle if it's all the same

Didn't even occur to me to remark on the targets.

Only a bureaucrat could think a 'man shaped' target poses some kind of risk.

They're fun indeed.

Recoil's a whole different thing on the automatics. You say a round doesn't have much recoil and is easy on the shoulder, try it 15 times per second though

I'm poking fun a bit... It was ok really, perhaps foolishly though I was wearing a singlet at the time and shooting it shouldered against bare skin stung a little. My own fault in that respect.

Yes, an AK. Probably better described as 'sprayed' than 'aimed'

Recoil is as you'd expect. Rapid .308ish strength impacts on the shoulder.

It's hard to compare recoil apples for apples... for all the 'benefit' of gas return or spring systems in automatics reducing recoil, you sure still feel it when it's 10 rounds a second.
