Went to St Marys

Post by 2freeq » 01 Sep 2018, 6:25 pm

Hi all,

Let me start by giving a shout out to Brett1868 for meeting me at St Marys range today. Took the new Howa 1500 .223 and the Marlin XT22 so get them sighted in and Brett gave me some great advice along the way. It was a pleasure meeting you today. :drinks:

Today was my second time ever firing a rifle (hired a .22 last week) and my first time with a centrefire. Ended up getting both rifles sighted in and came to the conclusion my Howa .223 loves the blitz king factory rounds more than the Winchester super x rounds i had with me. Both rifles worked flawlessly and i put about 50 rounds through each of them and loved every second of it. Wish it wasn't 1hr40m drive each way though but it's worth it.

Thats great. Now comes the bad news you have to clean them more the 223 than the 22 but 50 rounds is quite a bit so it will have a fair bit of carbon and crap in the barrel.

Just finished cleaning her now. Took a fair while to get the cloth to come out perfectly clean. Maybe i'll do less than 50 rounds next time .

With the targets when i got there i bore sighted the scope with the target at 25m. As you can see in the first pic below, The first 3 rounds out of it were inch high and 2 inches left. Few clicks on the scope and next 3 rounds were a inch left. Few more clicks across on the scope and the 7th 8th and 9th rounds were on point using Buffalo river 55gr blitz kings at 25m

After that i moved the target back to 50m and changed to Winchester super X 55gr and the groups opened up to about a inch to inch and a half.

I'll give the Winchester ammo a second chance next time i go but i'm leaning towards sticking with the Buffalo River Blitz Kings.

Played around with the Marlin XT22 whilst waiting for the .223 to cool down but didnt try to hard to sight it in as i was testing it for my daughter who minor permit we are still waiting for.

Didn't need to give much advice as you were pretty well sorted and knew what you were doing. Hopefully next time it's a bit quieter and I'm not having to RO anything, always good to catch up with people on the forum. Sungazer has invited me to his place in a few weeks and I'll probably end up crashing there for a couple nights at least in between the comp in Mildura and meeting up with Brother Bentaz, Austac, Juststarting, Oldbloke and an assortment of other characters for our second annual meet & greet.
