As you are going to realise I don't shoot F-Class, was going to have a go but the local range has been closed permanently, I can't shoot prone for more than a few minutes due to permanent injuries.

Could you explain the scoring please. What is meant by "58 with 7" and "59 4".

Target rings are numbered from 6 at the center ring outward a so the maximum score from ten shots is 60 then you get Speer centers, used to break up shooters when the top few all shoot 60

So 58 with 7 would most likely be 8 shots in the 6 ring (including his 7 shots in the super ring) for 48 points with 7, 2 shots in the 5 ring for 10 points for a total of 58, then the 7 supers

It's a game I have only dabbled in but hope to get into t some point with my 6BR for out to 600 and .284 win at the longer ranges

Thanks mate, I might have to have a dabble at 500 & 800m out at that tree we ranged.

Next I'll have to find is how big the 6 ring is at various ranges. I found some info but not sure if it's right. At 500m, Super V 72mm and 6 Ring 145mm. That's a lot bigger than our "500m Fly Target" with it's 10 Score Ring at 46mm. So those 1.5-2.5" 5 shot groups at 500m would score well if they were on center. Sounds like fun.

Edit... BTW, is this "Best Edge" where touching/breaking the line brings the higher score.

And I realise it is not "Group" so no extra points for best grouping. Pity.

Oh how many variations of shooting targets there are out and about but it all makes you a better hunter as well by improving your skills.

all the rules are here http://www.nraa.com.au/wp-content/uploa ... ers-2b.pdf and chapter 6 covers scoring and chapter 13 covers targets and the ring dimentions for different distances

i'm not up to date with the scoring ring sizes as it has undergone some changes since i shot it, seems having half the field within a few points of each other required smaller scoring rings to sort the wheat from the chaff LOL

Chronos

edit: i have pasted the table showing target info but the formatting is rubbish LOL

at 800y it seems the X ring (6 points) is 5" or 127mm, pretty achievable if you take shooter error, enviromental conditions, bull ants, random load errors and anything else that can be blamed for not putting every shot in the same hole at 800y LOL

Sorry "MCLE" to take things "Off Topic" but you are making me wish I could have a go with my rubbish calibres.

Might have to go visit a mate down town and find out when he's next taking his 6mm Dasher for a run, or better still invite him up here.

Hi,

We have some guys that shoot 500m fly and shoot F-Class as well and they go well. Some of them go very well.

One of the things that some of them find hard is when they shoot Fly they are shooting off a very solid Bench, like a concrete Bench, very stable and usually under a roof.

But when shooting F-Class they find themselves laying on the ground on uneven mounds ( sometimes ) and with the sun beating down on them and it is a little different to what they are used to.

But if you can hit a fly at 500y you will probably do very well in F-Class as well.

It's all about getting out there and having fun.

Picking it up on Friday with luck as we are heading out for a shot on Saturday. They are putting a special plastic wrap on the bottom so when sitting on the Farley stand it doesn't scratch the paint under recoil. So post a pic on Friday hopefully.

If you want to add the "plastic wrap" to your other firearms it may be purchased prehaps through you local gunshop but if not BRT Shooters Supply it is pre-cut for the front and rear. Two pieces. I forget the exact name of the product but they call it "Stock Tape" and the front piece is about 150mm square, the rear 150mm x 70mm approx.

I use "Cordura" bags and it doesn't scratch/mark stocks nor need anything to make it slippery for a stock to "Track" correctly. Some do spay it with silicon spray as well. No chalk required.

Looking forward to the photos.

Cool.

For not scratching up the bottom... I've just been sticking a bit of clear contact on the bottom of mine when I'm on the bench.

Keeps it pretty, peels off easy without residue too.

Just something for the future.

The correct "Stock Tape" is made from Teflon (PTFE) or another type is UHMW (Ultra High Molecular Weight). It is reasonable thick, some are reinforced with glass fibre but most important they are slippery on the surface.

I believe the Teflon is the better but a little more expensive.

I dont think that our bags will scratch the stock but had the plastic wrap added just incase. we use a SEB bigfoot rear bag dont know what it is made of but smooth enough. And the Farley stand has the same sort of bag.I have seen the silicon spray often wondered about it.

There is a vid on youtube of a guy shooting benchrest and he has what looks like some kind of masking tape on the fore end of the stock where it sits on the rest, it's masked as he paints on lube of some sort so it slides back and forth smoothly but the lube doesn't stain the stock I guess.

Interesting anyway...

I too use a Farley Front Rest and a SEB Bigfoot Rear Bag (Filled with Blasting Grit). both use Cordura for the top sections of their bags.

The Clear Coat finish on the Laminated Gunworx F-Class Stock I have is not gloss but satin and I think it really needs the stock tape as I don't think it tracks as well as my others.

It's not about scratching the stock, it's about creating consistency.

One day the stock slides, next time it doesn't. That's bad for accuracy so they spray or chalk the bags so it slides every time.
