First Shoot Tomorrow!

Post by Aliqua » 28 May 2020, 8:18 pm

Going down to eagle park tomorrow for my first shoot. Thought I'd clean the rifle tonight -- its first clean since buying. Was actually surprised about how much of the production line oil came out.

25m laser bore sighted it again (for the 3rd time haha).

Just did a dry patch, if I've forgotten anything now is the time to find out before tomorrow morning

It’s been a long time coming Aliqua.

Yeah - the crud from a brand new barrel is pretty amazing but it’s NOTHING to what you’ll see after first few shots as they really loosen up tooling marks, crud, etc that patching just can’t do.

Don’t expect miracles - it will take some time and practice. Main thing is to enjoy the process...if you end up shooting 2-3 MOA don’t be disgruntled, it won’t be representative of the rifles or your ability...fa t is - tomorrow night, you’ll be reflecting on the day and you’ll have learnt more than you can imagine.
Enjoy!

Have fun! Dont forget to bring your own target frames. The more the better so you can set them up at different range.

Looks like 12th June will be the range opening day in QLD with some severe restrictions in numbers of people attending.

I'm looking forward to my 50m smallbore range opening as I can get largely unrestricted private access :D

I’m thinking of heading down there tomorrow too mate.
Did you have to book in or anything different due to the covid restrictions?

You’ll have a ball! Being a black powder addict, I always have a giggle when white powder shooters comment about dirty barrels lol
There's still a few of Wile. E Coyote's ideas that I haven't tried yet.

G'day Aliqua,
Made up a range box/bag yet? Plastic toolboxes from Bunnings make good boxes for starters to keep your earmuffs (ear protection is mandatory) shooting/safety glasses (highly recommended) cleaning kit, patches, pegs or duct tape to fasten targets (I use a 8mm MDF board and a cheap staple gun to fix targets), hammer, etc. It will evolve with time. Bruno is not open on Fridays or Mondays for another couple of weeks so take some snacks with you, you can get drinks at the office whilst your buying more ammo to burn through!! Have a great time, I wish I could come but I am shooting comps on Sunday so must stay home till then, Cheers.

+1 for the hammer.
Also, found pegs to be useless at EP with the wind there. Best to use bulldog / foldback clips.

Hey everyone. Thanks for the kind words and advice. Ended up sighting in at 25 and then moved out to 100. Wanted to do 25->200 sighting trick but there was a medium cross wind and another guy beside me shooting 308 saw about a 1inch move so I just stuck to 100m. Got it dead on in the middle after a couple of attempts. So I'm happy with that!

Yeah I have everything I need in a tupaware container and a backpack but there were things I left in my car (bulldog clips and hammer) but I got lucky with placement of sign (was just soft enough) and the wooden clothes pegs held up in the weather-- It wasnt too windy.

FYI, got down there about 12, and it was probably 3/4 full... no bookings required.. but I dont know what weekends would be like. By 2 when I left there were probably only 15 shooters?

There is so much to learn re: procedures and all the equipment I just treated today like a bit of an excursion with a shoot attached. Looking around I have a better understanding of what I need to bring next time.

I'll admit - shot 19 rounds, and I didnt clean at all while down there... again just too much to think about (blasphemy i know...) but i came home and dry patched, hoppes 9, dry again, rem oil and dry again... and put her away.

A bit of hoppes residue got puddled in the muzzle break during cleaning so I just did the best I could with a cotton bud and a rag, and then ran the rem oil through it... and storing it upside down for a few hours to see if anything drains... and I'll probably give it another quick once over tonight (dry patch).

Thanks again guys for all your advice and enthusiasm! I had a GREAT time! I'm going to read all your comments again and take from it what I can to make sure it's a smoother process next time :)

Ps browning xbolt 308 is a BEAST! :)

They have a gong setup at 500m. Just shoot at it. You got a muzzle on that rig?

Is that the copper that tears off or just a build up? Im pretty satisfied with my clean yesterday.

Again it was only 19 shots, not 90 do I didnt expect to much crud to be in there hehe

Yeah I think I pushed one out yesterday. Just looked down the barrel.. shes pretty clean. And I have to say - the barrel grouped quite well at 100m given the fact these were the first shots from a new rifle.

I was also still sighting it in at the same time - the attached photo is a collection of 25m and 100m shots... so I think the next day down at the range is going to show even better grouping.
