Automated target technology - anyone used target vision ?

Post by TassieTiger » 16 Jun 2020, 9:38 pm

Just came across an electronic target arrangement that pinpointed shot placement via audio sensors and then used a low frequency radio to transmit results back to a laptop or PC - out to 1 mile.
After I started researching - came across a few different options, cameras, etc.

Does anyone use these things - like this ?

Never mind - I’ve found A cat 5 Poe extender - meaning I can run a poe camera out to 600m and straight into a laptop.

Hey TassieTiger,

Sounds like you have a solution for your need with the POE camera.

I have used a setup like Shotmarker in the video. They give accurate velocities at the target, and have some other features (MOA/MIL markings, group centre, etc.) that are useful above just seeing where the shot hits.

Just don't shoot at the corners of the targets! Bad aim gets expensive....

Yeah - I did a bit of research and some set ups were ridiculed for poor connectivity and I cannot be buggered chasing gremlins.
Some others looked great but were horrendously expensive.

I’ll put a POE cam - “out there on a pole”, run cable and extender, zoom into target, set up laptop and see how we go.

I have one that feeds to my laptop but once I am on the range I cant see the picture on the laptop screen due to the strong light about.
Must need a different screen on laptop or something. Have not used it for ages.

100m is the maximum cable run specification for Cat5, at 600m the maximum data speed may be too low for a camera, if it even works at all, and PoE would have too much voltage drop to be useful unless you have a local power source near the camera and PoE injection close to it.
WiFi units with directional antennas can handle that sort of distance easily though.

100m is max distance for stand alone cat 5 on Poe - but a powered poe extender lengthens that as would a poe switch. (Plan was - 12v inverted...)

My experience with wifi directional yagi antennas and similar, is one day they are great, then next they are crap - susceptible to environmental factors beyond control.
I’ve seen blue tooth work reasonably well out to 1000m but associated trans/receivers are a bit excy for the concept and data rate might also be ?
A short mic link would be much better but need power both ends...

Wifi is used to 1000 yrds on all the different brands of electronic targets. They use a small directional antenna but not a yagi.

Is it stable Larry ? Do you know specs? Would obviously save work if I could sort wifi.

Yes they are very stable and very reliable. I predominately use Hexta but have also used Silver Mountain not quite as good re accuracy no problem wifi, Konsberg and the new kid on the block Shot Marker which is very affordable and i think would be a good candidate for what you are after. I may get one myself for home use one day. At the moment i just use the paper target and a motorbike or a gong. i only really use them at home to verify settings before going to a comp.
