Ssaa Belmont Brisbane anyone?

Post by Blr243 » 27 Jun 2020, 6:26 pm

Anyone shot there since reopening and is it worth the trouble ?.... I just checked the website regarding booking and there looks to be a couple of dozen new rules/ conditions .....I must say it does not look appealing and I’m contemplating sighting in my new rifle on its first hunting trip instead

I only go to ripley, on occasion I would shoot at belmont if I had a day off work id go there during the week. I have taken my dad there twice and after the abrupt, rude and borderline abuse for a simple question from my dad. I can honestly say they aint worth the time and with all of their made up rules i would honestly recommend that everyone stay away from the joint.

Im not one to complain and for the most part I dont, but they have a name for being tools and can honestly say the shoe fits them well.

You might be referring to the new covid-related requirements, and if so it seems to be across the board at all ssaa ranges, compliance to the new measures was a government requirement before ranges allowed to re-open.

At my range last weekend, as a range officer I had to take contact details off each attendee for tracking purposes and physically watch each person hand sanitize before them being allowed onto the range. (SHOW ME YOUR PAPERZ UNT SHMILE.!!)

Ultimately, if youre not down with the new requirements, probs best to sight her in up the bush.

Was just asking about the sec 93 form just a simple yes or no question. Dad was being polite and rather than been greeted with a yes mate or a simple yes, eyes are rolled droped sholders quietly mutters f/#$ sake and snatches the form off him.

I understand that people have crap days and so on but seriously we were there to have a good time just like everyone else. I love target shooting and on occasion ill take a friend or dad will tag along.

I can honestly say that something needs to change out at belmont they have a great range with great facilities. However the staff there not the range officers are seriously the biggest let down.

Ripley on the other hand couldn't be a better place to shoot I know most of the staff, all will have a chat with you and are approachable and most of them even know me by name and will ask for what ive been up to or any luck with hunting trips.

My local pistol club couldn't be any more helpfull and are always welcoming even with unlicensed shooters.

Its fair to say i love the place but my dealings with the front counter have been horid and whilst it has been almost 18 months since ive been out there I can't say its the first place that i think of for for even a lazy afternoon shoot.

I have used the range a few times, but I much prefer to do any testing or sighting in on private property. A portable shooting bench like the ones made from the folding work bench that a few of us use, are a good option. That is what I do now, and when set up, is better than the range for me.

I’d only go to SSAA Belmont if I was desperate, very desperate...
I’d rather wait a week or two and shoot on private land

I have experienced treatment from staff at Belmont as azza described. Most of the staff aren’t too bad, it’s just one or two clowns. I did see a RO go postal at a young fella cause he had his toe over the yellow line during cease fire. I almost thought he was going to send him to the Russian front
I haven’t been to Belmont since this covid crap
I’ve been shooting at Ripley for a few years now, and even with recent changes in staff out there I much prefer it to Belmont. Not that there’s anything wrong with the new staff , I just didn’t like some of the politics that brought about the changes

Yes, BLR24 the new Gov. requirements are a inconvenience to everyone BUT I would just suck it up a zero the new rifle at the range. I think you are limited to 200 yds. , so stick up a few targets and see how it preforms. I wouldn't trust my luck taking a new outfit into the bush and waste a few hunting days mucking around.

I just got on Belmont's website and it says that bookings are essential. Also something about sanitizing benches.

Never been there myself, but I understand your frustrations. My own pistol club has had "bookings essential" Temp checks on arrival, mobile phone number recorded, hand sanitiser after every visit to the targets, social distancing between shooters and only having a set amount of shooters on each detail and the required number of R/O's. Sounds difficult....not really. There is no socialising before, during or after and once the match is completed you must vacate the range to allow preparation for the next detail.
This aint gonna last forever, but at least you get to complete your shoots.

I have been since reopening and had no problems. Just follow the booking procedures online and the covid rules when you get there.

I did question the staff regarding the ban on lead shot. They could not tell me if it applied to just target load or buckshot and slugs as well. They did allow me to shoot slugs and 00 buck on that day but said they would seek further clarification.

Further, I have never had any problems with staff conduct at Belmont.

Thanks for the replies. I can’t boresight a new pump so sighting in on the farm will take more than a few shots. On the farm I intend visiting shortly I’m aware that he does not like cattle being startled with unnecessary shooting and I understand and respect his wishes 100 per cent. Belmont is 10 mins away compared to 35 for Ripley so I’ll probably bite the bullet and go local. Never had a problem with the ro’s but I think the counter staff can be a bit irritable due to the following ...... they know the sign in procedure back to front because they do it non stop all day. And it must be frustrating when oldies like myself turn up not prepared forgot my muffs not knowing which cards I need , no idea what number is what, can’t see the numbers on my card because I forgot my glasses , ask them what time it is for correct sign on time ....and they have to deal with this all day.

To get you on paper - maybe affix / tape a laser to top of barrel - dial in an inch lower than laser dot at 25m or so.
Might be just me - but I always feel like I’ve done something wrong or am about to do something wrong at a range...

The laser is prob a good place to start But for any decent range I should do this at night if I want to be able to see the laser .....should make things easier at the range later
