Something better than metal frames for shooting range?

Post by inspector » 01 Aug 2013, 2:56 pm

Just wondering what suggestions you guys have for something other than the little (dare I say, crappy) metal frames they sell at the SSAA range for holding up targets?

I've been out twice and hit a frame both times blowing it apart.

Suggestions for something better? I have a bunch of wooden shipping palettes at work I figured I could pull apart to make some small frames, but I guess these wouldn't last too long either.

Suggestions?

Star pickets. They will handle a few stray rounds no problem.

A 2ft tall one is about $15 or something from Bunnings? $30 for a pair and will last you ages.

Oh, and I assume you're shooting at the Eagle Park shooting range at Little River?

If so, get a metal mallet as well. That ground is a real bitch when your trying to drive a picket 6" into it.

Made the mistake of going out there the first time with a wooden mallet. Shattered the mallet half way through putting in the first picket.

They won't do you any good. Even if they're thick they'll splinter apart after 1-2 shots.

Exactly what I use.

A pair of star pickets and some masking tape to easily tape up/tear down boards with targets on them.

My pickets have half a dozen 30cal holes through them, no worries at all.
See you on the firing line.

Anything that's welded is pretty useless. One bump and the welding comes apart.

Using star pickets is good advice, or sticking targets up between any 1 piece frame of metal will do the job.
