Why no competition 22WMR?

Post by rigatoni » 07 Apr 2014, 10:28 am

22LR is obviously the king of rimfire competition.

Is there any particular reason 22WMR hasn't taken off here?

Just seems like the extra range could add another dimension to the shooting.

Just curious... Reasons why not?

It is too expensive to waste

It isn't as accurate as .22LR (well it wasn't until a couple of years ago and a few of the new loadings came out, I have tried one of the new lighter projectile offerings in my Anschitz and it was VERY accurate, but I went out and got a .17HMR anyway)

22WMR adds range, but not accuracy.

Good for hunting, bad for competition.

Best results are typically with sub-sonic ammo too in the 22LR.

At best a good 22WMR might break even with 22 in terms of performance, more likely it'll just be hindering you compared to a sub-sonic 22.

Magnums are no good for long competition days.

Too much recoil :D

There is still accurate supersonic ammo for the 22, but it's really for hunting.

At 50m and shooter for utmost accuracy there is no need for it, and you can't be the sub-sonic match stuff in that setting IMO.

Do you shoot comps with your Anschutz, Lorgar?

How do you go?

That's half the reason why I bought it but TBH I've never gotten around to doing a comp shoot

I planned to practice by myself for a bit to get in the swing of things then start competition shooting, I'm still having fun shooting solo though so haven't quite got the urge to do it yet.

You should give it a go.

Nothing wrong with the grouping photos you posted a while ago...

Yeah.

My shooting isn't the problem, I'm not worried about making an ass of myself with a terrible performance or anything like that

Just haven't quite got around to it...

SSAA has competitions you can use a 22mag in, Cowboy Lever Action Silhouette and a version of Field Rifle where the last sitting post target is at 100m instead of 50m for the 22LR.
