Resting on carpet to stop rifle jumping?

Post by mark04 » 06 Aug 2013, 10:33 am

Hi,

I was at the range the other day shooting off a bipod on concrete tables.

At the end of my shoot the range officer walked past and comment to me that I should have a bit of carpet underneath my bipod to reduce the muzzle jump. He said they have some there to test, but it was the end of the day for me and I had to get going, so didn't have time to try out his advice.

I'll give it a go obviously, but since I've now got the time is there something better than carpet? While I'm shopping for a bit of something to go underneath the bipod while shooting I might as well get whatever works best.

Suggestions?

Some plush carpet would do the trick. Or some closed cell foam (not styrofoam).

Anything which is a soft but firm surface really... Head down to Clarke Rubber and you should find something.

I picked up one of those foam yoga mat things with the jigsaw edges that you can connect together from the hardware store.

Works fine for me.

I'm sure you could pick up a rolling sleeping mat from whatever camping store for a couple of bucks and cut a square out of it too.

Might be a bit softer? Just a though...

I've seen a few guys shooting off squares of regular carpet at the range.

Couldn't say personally if it's the way to go as I'm no expert, but seems to be the popular option. Must be something in that...

Just about anything will make an improvement over shooting off a concrete bench. Carpet or those foam mats should both do the trick.

Do some reading up on "loading your bipod" to reduce muzzle jump as well.
See you on the firing line.
