750 yard fun

Post by deye243 » 25 Jan 2022, 9:56 pm

G'day all went out yesterday to have some fun health is finally letting me get out a bit took the steel rabbits and the "gas bottle" Target anyway enjoy if this is your kind of thing.

https://youtu.be/2IAj6GreCZw

And because I was filming on my own this one takes a while go to about 20 secs in then a zoom out to show you how far it looks . This is The Rusty Rabbit just a smidgen left of centre screen if you're looking for it .

https://youtu.be/vY8Ge9T-fbU

And this one is about the same before the first shot 20 or 2 seconds this is my "gas bottle" Target .

Yes I seen that the other day good shooting these two pics are at 1205 and one pic actually shows you on the Moa converter what it comes out at .
I did steel rabbits at 1205 today when I get the video done I'll post it up.

With Magnum calibres this is about my rate of fire then I'll let it sit for half an hour.
That and my experience with clubs over the last 30 years has left a very sour taste in my mouth

Projectiles will hit a smidgen below centre of Target that one went just on 3" at 1026 yards

Short space of time????
I have actually been to an F-Class shoot and the boredom was palpable. But I guess if you're only going to fire 10rds per month you'd want it to last :-)

Hah! It’s all a matter of perspective. I find TR and F luxuriously slow coming from an SR background - in SR we have to shoot our 20-to-30 round matches in well under 10mins, with the second half usually seeing 10 rounds in not much north of 1 minute. Nevertheless, what you do is simply surgical!

I was told you only had 15 minutes to get three sighters if you want them and 10 scoring shots no way known and hell am I doing that with a 7mm Remington Magnum not unless you only want a 6 to 800 round accurate barrel life

Often 10 mins for 10 (inc. 2 discardable sighters), or 15 mins for 15 (inc. 2 discardable sighters). Everyone has their own strategies, but I know some top TR shooters don't "spread" their shots over the time period - rather they crank through them as quickly as they can, as soon as the winds are favorable. Sometimes this might mean delaying shooting until they are almost out of time, if the wind is fishing about. Then there are some top F shooters who just shoot literally as fast as possible, with the thought that the wind should be fairly consistent in that small window of time. They just lay down and "pow pow pow..." - I've seen all ten easily go into the V (sub moa) like this with lots in the X (1/2moa), which is pretty damned incredible. Just depends on the conditions.

The 'hot barrel wearing out faster' belief seems to be carried to extremes by some shooters.
Barrel steel whether chrome moly or 'so called' stainless only begin to experience a change in their properties in the temperature range 200 to 400 degrees C.
I don't think even 20 rounds fired as quickly as possible in a magnum caliber bolt action would exceed 'very hot to touch' so something like 60 degrees C externally.
For normal shooting, provided the barrel is not abused by improper cleaning, the best measure of life is in kilos of powder.

This is certainly the sentiment in the circles I shoot in, and also my personal belief. There is some belief the service rifle barrels don't last as long as target rifle barrels, because SR is harder on the barrel during rapid fire / snap details. Yes they get piping hot by the end of a 22 round SR match, enough to scald the skin. But even still, 7.62mm service rifles are getting North of 5000 rounds before they start to "spray". 5.56mm is a little less, but not by a whole lot. IMO, 10 rounds in a few minutes will have no measurable difference in barrel life compared with say 10 rounds spread over an hour.
