Target archery vs target shooting

Post by Non-member question » 29 Aug 2024, 2:51 pm

I'm interesting in target shooting, but at the moment it's not practical for me to have a safe and the budget is a bit tight for some of the expenses of shooting.

I found that I don't need a license for a bow and arrow in Victoria. Do any of your members do target archery?

I'm wondering if its still satisfying and worth giving a go, or if shooting is my real interest if I'll get bored of archery quickly. And am I better off saving for the real thing and a safe when I move houses.

Can you share some experience. Thanks.

I think I'd get real bored having done shooting first.

I know some hunters go from hunting with rifles back to hunting with bows for the increased challenge. I kind of get that, but it's not for me.

If you're strapped for cash at the moment look for a second hand bench 22lr. The ammo is dirt cheap, you only need a small basic safe.

That's about as cheap as you can get away with.

I do both target and field target archery but mainly field these days. Very rewarding and a lot of fun and like most sports can get quite expensive once you start going down the rabbit hole. Best thing is to find a club and go have a look.
Target is just that, score shooting at targets set at known distances. Target archery is more for the purist or Olympic wannabe. Been there done that, way too political these days.
Field is closely related to hunting with animal targets, paper or 3D, set at unknown distances usually in scrub where you walk around a course to each firing point. 3D is my favourite as it is a solid rubber animal target that closely resembles what you find when hunting. This is the most popular shoot up my way with huge followings from both male and female rednecks and rugrats. There are different classes in field from bare bow to unlimited that are basically limited by only how much one wants to spend..

It's been more than a few years, but personally I'd be lucky to hit the broad side of a barn with a bow.

As proven during school archery sessions back in the day

I'll stick with the rifled stuff.
See you on the firing line.

Those were the days of a tree branch and bit of string though, weren't they?

A modern compound bow might do you a bit better
