A beginner question about sighting in

Post by MG5150 » 05 Nov 2024, 6:44 pm

Hello Everyone

I've got a newbie question when it comes to adjusting my scope - I still confuse myself every time I do this.

Let's say I'm aiming at the centre of the target and this is my grouping at 100m

(I've tried attaching the image if the link isn't working)

Am I correct in thinking that I need to adjust my scope to be approx 1.5 inches to the left and 3 inches down?

Assuming this is correct and my windage dial is clockwise for left and counterclockwise for right, I need to adjust windage 6 clicks to the left at 1/4 clicks?

I will also have to adjust the elevation (clockwise for up) counterclockwise for 12 x 1/4 clicks?

(shooting a Leupold VX3 3.5-10 on a Browning Xbolt)

I just responded to your post on FB, so I'll just cut and paste my response here :-)

"The simplest way to zero is if you can set the rifle in place with the crosshair on the point of aim you used to shoot the group, then just move your reticle to the centre of your group. I'm guessing your scope is unlikely to be calibrated in "inches at 100m", it's more likely to be in quarter-minute clicks (or mils). In which case a minute is 1.145" (29mm) at 100m, not an inch (25.4mm). Moving the scope four clicks (7.25mm per click) will move your bullets 29mm at 100m, not 25.4mm. If you are three-inches high (76mm) then you want to adjust down ten clicks (72.5mm), not 12 clicks (87mm). If you are 1.5" right (38mm) you want to adjust five clicks (36mm), not six clicks (43.5mm). If you have a reticle with graduations on it you can ignore whether you need to move so many inches or millimeters, just read off the reticle how far your group is from the centre in minutes (or mils) and adjust that many minutes (or mils). This works regardless of your range as minutes are angular measurement, not linear, a minute will always be a minute whether you are shooting at 20m or 2000m."
