Hey guys, can anyone remember who was shooting the solid lead 308 projectiles at the last Mudgee Meet up?
just wanted to ask them a couple of questions about their load.

That would be decoy. I think they are top score cast bullets.

Sweet, will try to make it to this one, have more than enough time to check and clear the schedule :)

Again, if anyone is interested in trying out archery with a 50-70lb compound bow let me know so I can bring it, don't want to lug it around for no reason :D

Decoy, care to share what those cast bullets weighed? I know they shot pretty well at 100m

I had the cast lead .308's
I started with 32 gn, pushing the pill at 2200 fps but grouping was crap.
they where Top Score 155gn with gas check, I used 29gn 2209 @ 1900 fps getting a ~2" group at 200m

This is a non standard unlisted load in the ADI hand book
It is 13gn under the first documented starting load using 42.5gn of 2209 with a 168gn jacketed pill.

cool, thanks Decoy, i thought they may have been topscore. HPGS can order them for about $55 per 500 rounds, but abela's was quoting $75. not sure why so much difference for a couple of shops owned by brothers!
i'd like to throw a few of them up that valley in front of the main shed at Mudgee. From memory there are some nice steel plates up that valley that only take full lead and no jackets? (ie not even hollow points?). i believe from memory there is some steel right out to 500m?
quick question though... is the gas check crimped on? i have a full re-loader set, but nothing for fitting a gas check, so if i need more equipment i'll probably give it a miss..
also spent some time today looking at 12g's. its down to webley & scott u/o 912 or akkar churchill. PTA lodged..
cheers pete

pete, i've got two AR500 plates coming that won't care if you use jacketed bullets ;) but at those prices i can understand your interest in cast bullets

yeah i'm not massively interested in the lead projectiles, its more just for a bit of fun - i love the idea of those steel targets stretching up that valley!.
to be honest, i'd be more than happy with just 100 full lead projectiles, but minimum buy seems to be 500!
god knows when i will ever use 500 full lead projectiles! it will take me years of mudgee meets i am sure!
hey btw, where did you buy your ar500 from?

unfortunately you have to run them through a case size lubing die or you can use a lee 308 neck crimping die
regardless of the extra step in this process and the outlay for a crimp die etc, lead projectiles make great cheep hunting rounds or just practice/plinker rounds that virtually dont foul or wear your barrel.

if you bring back the velocity to 1200-1400 fps or less you can use the coated bullets without gas checks..

Topscore Projectiles have a proprietary Gold Coat Lube it increases the velocity lead projectiles can be fired at and eliminates lead barrel fouling.
I highly recommend them, great bullets..

Believe it or don't, despite living in TAS I may actually make it to this, I have to head to Sydney mid next month and will be taking the camper, I want to have another look at the Lithgow SAF, Pucka etc so will be making a trip out of it with dad.

May take something interesting in .303, a target rifle for the fly and a couple of pistols perhaps.

We will see what is available on the Ferry.

Just remember, Lithgow SAF Museum is not open every day, check opening days & times. A few travellers have been caught by a closed door.

I hope there will be a bit of a 300m Fly Comp at least as I want to use it for practise since there are 300m & a 500m Registered Match two weeks later in Wagga. Bit of practise would be handy in the cold and windy Windamere Range.

Born and Raised in Rylstone, oldies still live there, might be a good excuse to come home for the weekend and get some long distance shooting in.

I will let the organiser know if I can get away (need to ask the boss if she wants to get away)

We could have a 500m Fly shoot, as there are some things happening.

'some comments deleted here' - just got to remember this page is PUBLIC visible.

Anyway - we may have some progress on the 500m Fly stuff.
Soil Con - the 'official Crown Lands' ground/soil 'relocaters' & diggers - are going to do some earth works on the WRSC silly wet range.

Just throw money................ lots of money................

Should be getting a 2w drive track to the 500m target line and the rails/target points at 500 dug/constructed to 3 levels for the rails/target frames (same as the 385m) with 2m or better bullet stop.

We 99.9% finished the "hopefully cattle proof" fench at the silly wet today, so they can't camp under the roof over the shooting bays, 900mm hindgejoint, 3 high-tensile & 3 barb at the top. Only got to shovel out the sh*t after 4+ years of cattle occupation, etc.

'further deleted content'

BUT .... not finished yet! So we keep working at it.................
