Alternative shooting rests to bipod/range rest

Post by steyroy » 23 Sep 2013, 7:44 pm

Wondering if people are using anything interesting for their shooting rests rather than a regular bipod or normal adjustable front rest like you see everyone with at the range.

Saw a video on some unrelated shooting stuff, and the guy looks to have something like a section of a large inner tube cut off, tied up and blown up for the front rest - like a small car tyre width.

For the rear he had a smaller set up with what looked like a bike tyre cut and tied the same way.

Anyone use this kind of set up for their shooting rests? How do they go versus a regular bipod or whatever...

I'd have though inner tubes would be pretty wobbly for a shooting rest?

Nothing wrong with the trusty old tripod :D

I can see it now... Jumping in a bouncy castle at the range while target shooting, getting some nice 10 metre groups :D

Tire tube is an interesting idea if correct. Wouldn't have been my first idea but I suppose if the air pressure is high it could be stable?

Wasn't a rolled rubber mat? or black foam?

I sometimes use my backpack as a rest if it's pretty stuffed. Gives a nice wide platform that's pretty stable.

That's basically what I have for my rear rest.

I have a 6" wide strip of closed-cell foam from Clarke rubber that is rolled up to be about 3" thick, and just move that back and forth under the butt to change to angle I'm aimed at.

That and a few layers of foam under the bipod at the front to reduce the hop a bit.

I've made a quick and simple front rest for the range buy using an old car mechanical bottle jack (like the one in the photo). Rubber backed carpet on the base to stop it moving around and a small shot filled leather bag on the top to rest the rifle on. Heavy & solid (can can lift a car). OK for range, wouldn't want to cart it around but at a cost of $0, it makes not to bad an adjustable rest.

$0 is the correct price ;)
