Mil Dot ranging tool

Post by wimpb » 21 Aug 2014, 2:27 pm

Hi all, I developed a mil ranging tool similar to the mil-dot master but metric and free.

https://docs.google.com/file/d/0B3dxigN ... edit?pli=1

If you have any feedback, let me know. If you're a long range shooter who has ideas of what other calculations it can do for you let me know and I might be able to add it. I'd like to eventually have it printed on plastic cards or the like, but I wanted to see what shooters thought of it first. Personally I don't do any long range shooting yet, I just made this to satisfy my curiosity.

Here's what it looks like all complete. If I had a mil-dot scope and I measure a 1.1m tall object to be 3mils then the range is about 375m. Give it a go.

Ok, about to embarrass myself.

I'm curious but don't get it, how does this work soz?

(I know what the mil-dot reticle is, just not using one)

Mil Dot ranging works by knowing (or estimating) the height of your target.

If you were varminting you'd work on the basis that a fox is 1 foot tall at the shoulder.
An average Sambar is 4 feet tall at the shoulder.
If you were in the military a human target might be 6 feet tall.
And so on...

Using wimpb's example and photo...

He know's his target is 1.1m tall.
In his reticle the target is 3 MIL.
To get the distance he moves the slider so the size 1100mm is at the 3 MIL point, and reads the distance marker which gives him 375m.

Make sense?

Just double checking 1 point

"In his reticle the target is 3 MIL"

You mean the target is between 3 dots right? Top dot at the tip of the target, one in the middle and bottom dot at the very bottom of the target when looking through the scope.

Right?
