I traveled to NZ to compete in the Queens in Wellington back in the 80's. For those that don't know. The Queens is a prone shoot using 7.62 Nato rifles at ranges from 300 to 1000 yards with open peep sights.
I was doing a lot of practice at the time and was competing well with good results at both Sydney and Brisbane and thought I was in for a real chance at a top 10 placing in NZ.
We were at 900 yards on this particular day and it was blowing an absolute gale. I was doing pretty well with a string of bulls and centers on and then I missed a wind change. I didn't even hit my target. I had missed mine and hit the target three targets down from me.
To get perspective, those targets are 10 foot wide and a 3 foot gap between each. I had missed my target by 30 odd feet (10 meters). A magpie (or 3) on your own target is a bad shot for most at that level and that's missing the bull by less than a meter.
Plenty of Kiwi's " taking the p***" that day I can tell you!
needless to say, I didn't make the top 10.
