I traveled to NZ to compete in the Queens in Wellington back in the 80's. For those that don't know. The Queens is a prone shoot using 7.62 Nato rifles at ranges from 300 to 1000 yards with open peep sights.

I was doing a lot of practice at the time and was competing well with good results at both Sydney and Brisbane and thought I was in for a real chance at a top 10 placing in NZ.

We were at 900 yards on this particular day and it was blowing an absolute gale. I was doing pretty well with a string of bulls and centers on and then I missed a wind change. I didn't even hit my target. I had missed mine and hit the target three targets down from me.

To get perspective, those targets are 10 foot wide and a 3 foot gap between each. I had missed my target by 30 odd feet (10 meters). A magpie (or 3) on your own target is a bad shot for most at that level and that's missing the bull by less than a meter.
Plenty of Kiwi's " taking the p***" that day I can tell you!

needless to say, I didn't make the top 10.
Now that's been said, who's coming for a shot?

2 shots on the paper (out of 13) on the 200m Big Bull target with my Sharps 40-65.

I was out duck opening about 10 yrs ago. Sitting in the tinny at sun rise. The opening was expected to be slow so I decided to toss a line over the side for a trout with my new rod. You guessed it, first shot of the season I was swinging onto a blackie and and removed the top 12 inches of my new rod. Not a cheap rod & to add insult missed the blackie too.

Just some general crappy shooting when I started I guess.

My first rifle was a .308. got a bit of a flinch, the normal stuff...

Shooting from an uncomfortable position I did 5 shots at a 8" target and missed all of them

(In my defence was with untested ammo too so that contributed ;))

Shooting my target frame apart on the first shot was always fun.

Did that 2 or 3 times straight out of a ceasefire when I started shooting.

My worst shot to date was last week.

First shot was almost a bullseye, second shot barely grazed the outside edge of the black circle on the target, at 50 metres.

Only my fourth time shooting, so I'm sure to be able to do worse than that. We'll see what this week brings.

I'd also like to add one from my dad, about 20 years ago.

He was aiming for a fox, that was moving at great speed, but missed the fox. He hit the rabbit that the fox was chasing instead. The fox ran off with a ready-prepared meal!

I lost two fish to pelicans once. And given they were the only two fish I caught for the day, I wasn't impressed.

They were too small to keep, but still, that wasn't the point! lol

Went out shooting with a grazier who was convinced that lever actions were no good. First pig we saw I lined up too quickly and the hammer snagged on my thumb jerking the barrel and causing me to miss by 10 meters. Will never hear the end of it!

Was out spotlighting in the early 90's on my own, spotted a roo 50M outside the left front window. I took the shot from inside the cabin cause it was cold outside and I didn't want to spook it. In my haste I'd forgotten to wind the window down and you can guess the rest. Was difficult keeping a straight face explaining how it happened to the hire car company and I missed the roo. I considered it a good lesson in Karma.

Last weeks effort was pretty bloody ordinary - 3 shots at foxes and none hit the deck, mind you there were around 320m - 365m with the 222, also missed one some how at 100m (I'm having a bit of a bad trot lately) so plenty of room for improvement

Smoking hole in the carpet ahead of me (indoor range, prone) and a smack round the back of the head!

Achieved at age 11, learning to shoot with a .22 Martini action and pulling the lever back with finger ready for trigger

Hire cars are magic and can go anywhere, that's why I always buy the extra insurance :) The tracks up the farm are good and road cars are fine though taking the hire car cross paddock at speed was fun.

I had family living in Canada 35 years ago and someone apparently (before my time, second had story here) unloaded a rifle but left one in the pipe before putting it in the basement.

Sure enough, bang, 1 straight up through the floors, the kitchen, and out the roof.

I fancy myself as a reasonable shot with rifle and hunting with a shotgun. But however clay pigeons seem to be elusive cunning creatures. Last time we had a shoot was using friends beretta, missed 6 from 6 with 12 rounds, got the shhiits went to car and got the 7 shot lever action chiappa 12g, more for joke than anything, but hey loaded it called pull and 7 shots and 4 seconds later........... Another stealthily pigeon escaped into the wilderness. Certain I scared it pretty bad though!!

My mate would come close to holding the record . .40 cal pistol. Couldn't find any holes on the paper. After a series of one shot , looking up. No hole. One shot, looking left etc. finally found nice long skid marks half way down the range in the dirt. Now that's a flinch. We still call him " worm killer " lol
