Shooting range essentials - What's in your kit?

Post by jeener » 21 Sep 2014, 8:24 pm

Like it says :D

What's in your kit for a day at the shooting range?

Building my range 'go bag' with everything I need for the range so I can just pick it up and go.

Curious what other peoples kits are :D

What discipline do you shoot mate? Could change what's in the bag lol

For pistol I have a 5.11 tactical range bag that holds all my gear:
Pistols
Ammo
Cleaning kit that has brushes and jags for various calibres, patches, oil, solvents and various tools for sight adjustment and such
A brass rod for knocking out stuck bullets
Magazines/ speed loaders
Safetys/ear muffs
Holsters
Notebook

For rifles I've got a big box that doubles as a cleaning rest and that holds:
Cleaning gear
A bag of tools (screwdrivers, a couple of different picks, toothbrush)
Some old rag
Safetys/ear muffs
Notebook

Outside of that box I also take a front rest, chronograph, ammo box, cleaning rods and a spotting scope.

I think that's everything

Your rifle bolt.

I've learned that if you leave that at home you're s**t out of luck.

CBF with cleaning gear at the range. Do it when I get home instead.

Ears, eyes (don't normally wear them but if the RO feels like enforcing it that day).
Targets pre-mounted on board, tape and more targets.
A pair of star pickets and a steel mallet to put them into the ground for targets.
Metal plate for some gonging and wire to attach to the pickets.
150 rounds.

Morning well spent.

All of the above but I also take a tension wrench. I like to check my take down screws before I shoot.
Call me fussy but it just makes me feel good and that can make all the difference between a good and a bad shoot. 8-)
Now that's been said, who's coming for a shot?

I don't do pistol shooting but I'll be buggered if I know what half the guys are carrying.

Half of them are wheeling in pelican cases full of stuff at my local range for the pistol section

He he.

I only shoot my rifle so think of that as "going to the range".

My bad.

The bigger the bag the more you put in it . Give those guys a small handhold bag and they'd make do with the essentials. The stuff I absolutely had to take to the range doubled when I got a larger range bag

There is a guy shooting .22 BR at springvale that just about brings his shed with him when he comes.

Bunch of targets mounted on boards, power drill for screwing them into the stand, full set of tools for taking down/ up his rifle.

Has a wheelie shopping trolley thing overflowing.

What one takes also depends on the range, it isolation or not, if it has a café attached like Springvale or Eagle Park. Water, especially in the warmer months of a thermos with coffee and something to eat. My pistol or rifle bag containing some items that have never seen the light of day since 2000. FIRST aid kit with a works in it. Then ammunition and that's it, my pistols have never broken down, other than 1 slide stop and my rifle (JGA) which my father gave me in the late 60ies still shoots first time very time.

Guy named Bruno runs it, fantastic guy, great food and coffee, a must on any day, seeing the range is now open on Friday as well.

I got access to a 2000+ acre range. Aka the brothers laws farm. Plus 400 of my own. I lie I have been to the local pistol club twice using a friends .22 but other than that never, a coworker frequents a range on the coast and raves about it, he's only new to shooting and gets lots of advice might go for a sqizz one day and see how the howa performs against the paper hunters
