Paper for printing shooting targets on

Post by disko » 26 Nov 2014, 2:16 pm

Someone here will know about paper :D

I've been printing the forum shooting targets on office paper and flimsy and they tear and crease and are a bit of a pain in the ass.

It all looks the same wrapped up in stack at office works... What do I buy that will be ridged for targets that I can put through a home printer?

Office works sell 160gsm paper (printer paper is 80gsm) in packs and they will go through your printer. I have some in yellow and ok range for printing black targets onto.

Tearing when shot?? If you use a thin ply or mdf and staple on they should keep the perforations to a minimum... and give you a good economy... else read the instructions of your printer, some will print heavy paper / card stock, say 240+gsm.... then go find the card, craft stores carry different colors and densities...

"gsm" is the weight of the paper which roughly equates to thickness as well.

You office paper will be 80gsm or something similar.

At about 170gsm an A4 sheet will stand upright and flat against its own weight if help from the bottom. Have a look starting there.

If you go heavier check the paper handling specs for your printer before you buy a tonne of paper. A common printer will have a limit of about 200gsm and won't be able to feed anything heavier. Some will print on card in the high 200's though. You'd need to check.
See you on the firing line.

I meant more in just handling and sticking them up in the wind, but that as well.

Thanks for the info. Chronos and Aster as well.

About bang on I reckon.

I have 250gsm targets and they never tear or get creased up.

Alternative a can of spray glue and whatever backing is available. There's a lot of solar flute board littered around Victoria at the moment. Noone will miss it, particularly after Saturday's election.

Weighing paper by the metre is a bit weird no?

In a home/office setting, yes.

In commercial printing where it all starts though they use giant rolls which can be hundreds of kg, or tonnes. They also use individual sheets but large scale printing isn't directly onto small paper sizes like A4, A3 etc. It's done on large "parent sheets" multiples at a time then cropped down.

A0 is the largest parent sheet in the A paper range, and it's 1m square ;)
