Would depend on target size, moving or stationary and of course distance.
I can only comment on small bursts with 5.56mm from 25m and 100m and wouldnt want to be the target at either range.

At 25m id pepper your chest. At 100m id string scatter from your balls to your melon without too much effort.

Emptying full mags at 25m was fun. Accuracy was not my priority, getting as much ammo through before being shut down was :D

Can we assume that in some circumstances rapid fire is more important than accuracy?

Just thinking that when laying down suppressing fire you may not even have a target, just a general direction?

Struth, you'r taxing the old gray matter now.

3 rounds rapid - you popped up fired 3 rounds rapid at a target(s) that was usually obvious, exposed and close, ducked down and the bloke a couple up from you did the same etc. Accuracy counted.

3 rounds burst - with a 303 Bren gun from the prone position, don't stand in the doorway out to 600 yds. With the M60, 7.62 I could put 2 rounds into the base of a empty beer can with the 3rd at top at 12 O'clock at around 30 yds.. These are different weapons, different roles with regard to accuracy.

Hay Chronos - Rapid fire was employed when the targets were usually close and exposed and in numbers. Suppressing fire or covering fire was used usually against targets to keep them pinned down, moving and returning fire. The direction was usually pretty precise, might have friendlies moving in on the flanks etc.

As I said, been a long, long time.....

Phew, Head hurts now, have to go have coffee.

I've got some targets from shooting 5.56 and 7.62 in bursts and full-auto somewhere.

I'll find them and post them when I'm home.

Not saying I'm great at it but you can see some results

When you have to carry all your ammo for a 2 week trip in the jungle, you learn to be careful with your rate of fire.

3 round bursts do tend to keep heads down but full auto with an M60 holding 100 rounds in a link belt is a wast of ammo.

A bit different if you are on a fire base or vehicle mounted, but when you're on foot you don't waste it. The drill on breaking contact used to be fire a series of 3-4 round bursts while disengaging. That's with a whole section doing it.

In an ambush we were trained to attack into the ambush. Sounds weird but it works. That's why Australian ambushes used Claymore mines a fair bit.

Yeah, the only mags I had, apart from Playboy was 9mm (28 round mags) on a OMC and never really used it for shooting at bullseyes. Only used to fire short busts - 3 or 4 rounds at a time.

I have them somewhere though for sure, wouldn't have chucked them.

If/when they turn up I'll post them for you.

Soooo.

I've just spent the last 45 minutes going in circles around the house trying to find these targets with no luck.

I am going to be pissed if they've been thrown out...

KWhorenet pretty much got it.

Although, at 100 yards, my group might be about the same but they might not all hit a silhouette because the bullets won't necessarily land in a vertical string.

I carried an M249 in the military for a while and learned to use it by throwing out the TTPs. Let the guns run so your body gets the rhythm of keeping the front sight (or dot) in the desired impact zone rather than just walking off with every trigger pull.

I got much better as a civilian, though. Unofrtunately, MGs are very expensive here. But I guess you can't have them in many western and European countries so there is that.

Mate we can't even have a semi-auto .22 here unless it's for work.

Then it's only for work, can't use it outside of the property you're working on.

Couldn't take it on a fun hunt somewhere else or to the range for fun shooting.

Well with the actual real MGs you probably know it's almost the same in America since they costs thousands or even more. Heck, I'm glad I got mine when I did. Not sure if you have heard of Slidefire (since you don't have semi-auto) but I tried it and it works pretty well! Lots of people are buying those just for goofing off at the range.

Define accuracy? What one person thinks is ok another will not accept . 3 shot bursts are a way of laying down suppression fire while still maintaining some control and accuracy and to conserve ammo.

Rather than a full auto which can pull most of the shots way off target as it recoil climbs, if you empty the whole mag.

Well trained soldiers using the lighter assault rifles control the trigger on full auto and mainly use short bursts anyway for the above reasons .

I don't think three shot burst fire would do much good for varmint shooting rabbits at 500 metres .

At least 10 minutes. I usually don't load them in the field/at the range, I usually do it at home.

After a couple of those the gun is all clogged up from dirty .22 so I usually use stick mags or smaller drums.

175, 220, or 275. The videos are 275 and the other was either 220 or 275. Maybe you can hold a shot timer/counter up to the computer and tell me :)

I normally shoot 27 round stick mags and 50 round drums with that .22 conversion kit.
