Shooting range targets which are more fun

Post by tripletwo » 17 Oct 2013, 10:14 am

G'day guys

I'm keen on target shooting but I gotta say that shooting a paper bullseye does get old.

You can only look at so many groups in a day...

Spent the morning watching people shoot watermelons and the like on YouTube

What do you guys do to spice up punching holes in paper?

Get some rabbit , goat and pig targets set up at different ranges like you were out on a hunt.

I've made some metal swingers, all different sizes (made from bisalloy) and set them up.

Shooting metal targets never gets old, plus bisalloy can take my 30-06 hit no worries and not even dent the steel.

Plinking sounds better than tearing paper ;)

The right ideas going on above.

Get some paper bunnies up at 50m and 100m. And some pig targets at 100m and 200m.

Metal plate at 100m-200m is hours of fun :D

I've got just two words to say to you...Garden Gnomes!
There's still a few of Wile. E Coyote's ideas that I haven't tried yet.

I get the feeling that's not an "approved range target"

Gday, first post here. Have you tried Silhouette competition ?
I shoot that the most because I too just got bored with paper targets.
My club is currently working on getting a Practical Rifle comp recognized which I think will be great fun.

Hey Smiley,

Nah, I don't really have time for scheduled shoots like that :(

For me it's usually surprise trips to the range when an opportunity presents itself and I can escape for a few hours.

It comes down to what your trying to achieve. I find shooting fun targets and steel gongs pointless after the first 1 or 2 shots.

I don't see the attraction in shooting a 10" steel plate at 200m. My rifles are expected to shoot sub MOA at least. That's near enough to 2" at 200m. Give me a challenge, make it a 1" gong and I'd be interested.

I've watched guys throw boxes of ammo at a steel plate at 400m. What did they learn? They have no idea what kind of groups their guns are capable of because they don't have targets to compare groups with previous trips or see how wind changes affect fall of shot.

Try different shooting positions, try shooting fast, slow, try to put every shot in the same hole. If you can't ask yourself "why not ?" I've heard guys say "shooting at 50m is pointless"

my mate asked them "can you put every shot in the same hole? Then why do you need to shoot further? You're groups aren't going to get smaller at 200m"

Have fun but remember why you're there and make sure you go home knowing more about your rifle, your ammo or your self than you did before you went to the range

I dunno... Varying the targets makes it more fun I think.

Shooting the at the same bullseye over and over is mega boring IMO.

Chasing new this like in the targets Monty linked is fun for a while :)

Sounds like the OP wants to get a pistol and shoot IPSC.
But he can't commit the time to go to organised shoots.
What a dilemma!

That's exactly my problem.

Would love a pistol, CBF with maintaining the license.

Hang a small gong, 1 litre spent propane bottle, something that size from a single line in a little wind.

Increase the line length for more challenge.

Adds a little difficulty to keep things interesting.

Maybe have a look at the self-flipping targets that get further away with each hit.
