Keeping target in sight with braked .300 Win Mag

Post by joojoobeans » 16 Feb 2015, 8:02 pm

Reading about the Sako 85 Long Range on their size which is factory braked, the sales spiel says "Flush design muzzle brake was added to reduce the recoil. Muzzle brake will make it easier to keep the target in sights after the shot."

Only comes in .300 Win Mag and .338 Lapua Mag though. Even with a break, can you really keep a .300 Win Mag on target through the whole shot?

Especially if you're shooting long range as you'd expect with this rifle. :?:

I can't keep my .30-06 on target with a brake on. Sure there is a reduction in recoil but it want stop everything.

I'm saying not a chance on any kind of sporter. There is just too much muzzle rise, brake or not.

Muzzle brake on a 300wm is to save your shoulder and not scope yourself

Not keeping it on target.

I was firing a couple off the bench last week to check zero, they were both on bipods and I was allowing them a pretty free recoil path, drew a crowd and they were impressed by the amount they moved(no muzzle brakes).

Stupid calibre really.

Yep, stupid calibre and you know what is even more stupid - I actually have one and it is a s**ty old Ruger boat paddle job that kills at both ends if you aren't careful.

Collecting a Mark V Accumark in .300 Weatherby Magnum this afternoon...starting to think I should have waited a few months for the braked version....hmmmm. I have 2 eyebrows and bandaids are cheap so I'll be right....I hope :)

Muzzle jump contributes to losing sight of the target but recoil also plays a point by reducing eye relief therefore losing scope focus.

I think we're missing the obvious here too.

Don't need to see the target with a hunting rifle as there is a pretty way to tell if you hit it.... Did the deer fall over or not?

That moment when you get the thump of metal hitting meat is one of the best feelings going. Always try and get the target back in sight as quick as possible but more often then not you hear it hit before you see it go down.

I was gunna say you've got quicker reflexes than me if you can get back on target before the impact

That's the sticking point here.

The hint is in the name of course - Sako 85 Long Range - it's not a rifle for 50m-100m hunting.

"keep the target in sights after the shot" is over selling it, you couldn't keep it in the sights but could get back on it in time with the brake if you're shooting far enough.

Even more stupid is deciding to reload for it, well 300WSM in my case..... have a couple of visits to the range in my immediate future with nothing but being belted around to show for it....
