Can i fire this rifle at an SSAA range?

Post by Blobel » 14 Mar 2015, 4:07 pm

Hey everyone, i recently got my license and my father was kind enough to give me .308 Remington 700 VTR, however i just found out that you cannot use a firearm fitted with a muzzle break on SSAA ranges, the problem is the muzzle brake is part of the barrell (pictured below), its also a strange triangular shape so i would assume the muzzle blast would be directed more up than sideways, can anyone tell me if its okay to use this on an SSAA range?

Thanks in advance

I know you can use it at St Mary's indoor range providing you let them know it's fitted with a compensator. They can put you on a bay where you're not likely to upset any of the range princesses. As for outdoor ranges or competing I'll leave that up to the more knowledgeable to reply. Nice looking barrel but not sure how they call it a brake when there's no angle and it's directed straight up. The description reads "To decrease recoil and muzzle jump, this uniquely contoured 22" barrel has an integral muzzle brake that’s machined-in during production."

Yeah, ive shot at St Marys no problem, but i live a bit further up north and was hoping to go shooting without having to drive for 3 hours. In terms of the angle, those were my thoughts too, its not like the people next me are going to even feel it.. I hope the range is of the same opinion, im just hoping someone else has one and can let me know

Thanks for your reply tho :)

I know you can use them at the Silverdale Range, and im pretty sure the one at Hornsby allows them, you just have to tell them that's all

You can use this at the Kariong range, just have to join Central Coast Muzzle Loaders. Limited to 100m shoots, but, longer range shoots are on the calendar during the year.

Nah, you cant shoot triangular barrels there....

Seriously, I wouldnt classify it a a brake (or break for some  ) its more a compensator that forces the barrel downward, against the lift.

It may not be allowed on some ranges, but there is definitely not a blanket ban on muzzle brakes at SSAA ranged.

I shoot at the SSAA Little River centrefire range and guys are often using brakes there. They normally just go down the line a bit to give other shooters some space if possible.

I also shoot at the Springvale SSAA .22lr range, I've seen a few guys with compensators/brakes on their .22 shooting there as well.

They're not banned at all SSAA ranges. You should be able to use it at most ranges.

Look up and call whatever the specific range is at the area you're visiting and double check, but you should be right.

Majura range, canberra, has about every second person with gigantic brakes.
Its a continuous barrage of shock waves travelling down the line under the shelter....

Every range has different rules, ring your local range but these days brakes are fine most everywhere except NRA ranges
