Need an SSAA range in the east

Post by FuzzyM » 22 Mar 2015, 6:06 pm

Just putting it out there, I would love an SSAA centerfire range out here in the outer east of Melbourne.
Maybe Coldstream or something?
Bit of a pain to drive out to Little River just to have a bit of practice on the .223.
I know there are club ranges around, but I don't really want to commit to a target club just to get some practice on my hunting rifles.
There are plenty of firearm owners and hunters out here in the Yarra Valley, I'm sure it would be very popular,

I don't think you can just turn up and shoot for fun though.

Just competition shoots AFAIK.

No space for giving a few rifles a run or different targets, no casual shooting.

That's no good to most people.

(Assuming I've got that right).

I'm in SE Melb too.

10 minutes to Springvale or an hour to Little River :problem:

Other guys here in the same boat too I know.

Only reason I ever go to Little River any more is to take a newbie out for a first time shoot, something like that.

Don't go for myself any more.

Why would it need to be SSAA???

I have a couple of locations in the works just quietly, working with a group of shooters.... :silent:

Happens to be in the YValley, convenient to Coldstream, Lilydale Chirnside and surrounds......Planning permit application in the not too distant future. Big stumbling block is the overly green/enviro biased council

One location option is an outdoor 300m++ range (less likely)
Other being an indoor 25m and 100m ranges pistol/rifle (more likely)

At the moment there is no public info but any expressions of interest in potentially getting involved or joining up; please PM

^apart from this, I'm not aware of anything else happening out east...

There was the governments 12?million dollar funding promise for an outer east shooting centre, that turn out to be an upgrade to lang lang.... that went to nix... crappy place to spend the money I say, not exactly convenient to Melbourne or the east....

Wouldn't have to be. I was under the impression they were the only ones who had ranges in Victoria that is open to people who aren't in a club.
Like the idea of an outdoor range!

On the lilydale NRA club website they state they have previously offered sighting in for hunting rifles albeit not at the moment due to upgrades. They plan to re-open this however (just don't bring your Rem 700):

Some sort of centre fire range would be great in the east/north/north east outer Melbourne, I'm sure it would be popular and would cater for a lot of shooters over this way even if it wasn't SSAA.

I was just informed that there are smallbore ranges scatered over this way Northcote, fairfield, etc does anyone have any more info on these?

Little river is a awesome but a similar set up would be easy out this way

If you're seriously interested in an eastern range and prepared to put some effort in to get a new range up, pm me with your details. If you're happy to hang back then rock up when/if its up and running, thats also fine... refer my above post....

Note theres also the Hawthorm range, if anyone is interested refer other thread here

That's the first we've heard of this.

How often is that happening for you?

Happening when trying to contact the same people or makes no difference?

It's a nice idea but as it is everyone must drive to the Little River one anyway.

There isn't financial incentive for them to build a second range out east as it would just mean the same shooters going but the cost of running two ranges.

Could be wrong but that's how I see it from their POV.

Can't say I have ever bothered to drive the 250 odd kilometer round trip.
I would however have driven to somewhere out this side by now.
