How much .22LR wind drift?

Post by hoofit » 27 Mar 2015, 12:41 pm

G'day

Just wondering, how much wind drift is possible with .22lr subsonics at 50m?

We talking mm or cm in strong wind?

Here's a handy calculator

http://www.federalpremium.com/ballistic ... fault.aspx

A 10m/s cross wind will see a drift of 10cm with 40gr match ammo.

10m a second... 36kph your talking about there.

Practically speaking, who's going to be shooting bench rest .22lr in those conditions? (I'm assuming benchrest because 50m was mentioned).

Average wind speed in Melbourne (just an example cause I'm here) is something like 11kph.

1-3 cm more likely in practice. No where near 10cm.

Yeah, you're right.

I was just using the default setting on the balistic calulator i linked to. Somehow i assumed 10ms was 10kph. D'oh!

When wind speed is 3m/s (11kph) wind drift is 3.3cm

i like the calculator  for a ,22, i put in a 3 m/s cross wind = 12 kph ish and it moves 3 cm at 50 mtrs and 12 cm at 100 mtrs. at least i now know why i miss all the time

No worries.

Like I said not having a go, just bringing it down to some more practical figures.

Don't laugh. Recoil injuries from .22's are a serious thing.

I have a lost eyelash that may never grow back.

Sadly down at the SSAA Portland Range 36 km/h winds aren't that uncommon! Could explain the wind farm behind the Range!
