Little River shooting range costs and targets

Post by Matt1 » 12 Jul 2013, 3:43 pm

Hi all

Not sure if there website is down or something but haven't been able to get onto the SSAA website for a while now.

I'm starting shooting, and wonder is it worth joining SSAA for target shooting?

If I am a member do I still have to pay to go to their ranges?

Little river is a bit of a trek for me too as I'm in SE Melbourne - Anyone know any closer ranges? Eagle River seems like the popular one though.

$30 for non members and $15 for members to shoot there.

You can buy metal frames for about $15 or something to hold up targets, and buy paper targets for a few bucks, or bring your own.

Good value if you shoot often, not needed if you only go 2-3 times a year.

If you're going to join the best option is to do it online with the magazine subscription.

It's something like $60 for just the membership, or $80 with a years subscription to the shooting magazine and 4 issues of the hunting magazine.

Much better deal to get the mag too.

If you become a member, you only have to go 4 times in a year to break even on the cost. 5th+ time and it's cheaper than being a non-member.

Anyone with the bug will get the the range 4+ times a year no problems.

I've seen those. Also seen them in pieces after a stray shot, hehe.

Trying to find something myself now that's cheaper and easier than taping paper to metal frames.

I ended up becoming a member. I'm sure I'll get out there more than 5 times a year :D

Another advantage of SSAA membership is that SSAA (Vic) Inc. ( the State Branch, to which you automatically belong, if you live in Victoria) is a "recognised hunting club" for licensing purposes in Victoria - in other words, you do not have to provide details of a property to which you have permission to hunt on for your licence application/renewal, because in Victoria membership of a "recognised hunting club" is sufficient. A bonus - particularly if you compare the conditions for "hunting" in say WA!
