22 plinking targets hold up to centrefire at 200-300 metre?

Post by Antie » 23 Oct 2013, 6:27 am

Thought I'd check if someone's done this before I spend money to try and blow it apart :D

I'm sure we've all seen pics of people who tried a .22 swinging metal plinking target for their .270 or .308 or whatever centre fire and blown the thing the piece in no time flat.

Anyone tried them at 200 or 300 (or however faraway) with their centre fire calibre and found that it was ok?

How far did you have to go till you CF bullet had lost enough energy that the plinking metal could stand up to it?

I can tell you I've shot one at about 150m with my .270 win and it still went clean through...

Can't imagine 200m would be much different...

200m with a .308 = full of holes.

Can't say about 300m.

Nice train of though, but I think you're barking up the wrong tree here Antie.

The underlying issue is that the steel won't be hard/strong enough to stand up to centrefire bullet energies.

Even if they don't go clean through at 300, the target will come apart crater by crater pretty quick. Won't work as a long term target for you IMO.

buy some bisalloy targets for larger calibres. I hit my bisalloy with 30-06 at 100m and it doesnt even dent it.

Were they happy to just sell you a small plate though?

I tried a few local steel places a while ago and it was too small an amount to be worth their while or my cost for them to do it. They're used to doing quantities for proper construction or big sheets or whatever. Not just an 8" target.

Cheers for the link oohsam.

I think I'll be getting a few of those.
