What distance for sighting in

Post by Adlippy » 27 Nov 2016, 7:23 pm

Hi

Got myself a new toy yesterday, Finn Fire 2 in 17 HMR, my 22lr was getting lonely. I decided I sight her in at 100 meters using hornady v max ( about ten people have told me these are the best), is this the best distance or should I bring it back a little I have a little free tomorrow so plan on sighting her in and then take her on her maiden voyage

Cheers

I think you're on the money there.
For a 17hmr, I would start at 50m, get it grouping nicely. Then dial it in and fine tune at 100m.

GDay Adlippy
Sako's are an addition I have 3 , other than the Winchester model 70 in .458 win mag and a Barnard action F class rifle all of my rifles will be Sako's they just do everything as advertised . My Sako 85 varmint in .260 Rem just shot a .3 inch group this morning, my .338 Win Mag regularly shoots .5 Moa the .22 mag Quad holds less than an inch at 100 yards.every thing else I have every owned other than a Anschutz has required a lot of work to shoot that well, not to say that playing with a rifle isn't a lot of fun and time well spent.

As others have said, start at 50 then fine tune for 100, I use yards for moa scopes and meters for mil scopes just to be consistent. I have a set of Sako triplets, all identical setups with set triggers, bases, rings and scopes. The 85 S/S laminated varmint models are my preferred choice, they look great and shoot as well as they look.

Have to admit I'm loving the timber of the Finn Fire 17HMR, tiger stripe pattern looks the goods.

I have one 17HRM, it is a Savage/Stevens Favorite. Falling block with buckhorn rear sight, rather heavy trigger to boot. But it is the last gun my father shot, so it holds a special place with me. It is sighted in for 25 yards.

The 17HRM is one of those cartridges that seems to "Punch Above its Weight". The shooters that I know who have them really, really, like them. One farmer loves them for use on crows and skunks at ranges beyond 100 yards.

I've been asked: "How many guns do you need to have?" My answer remains the same: "One more."

I got a chance to sight in this evening not quite there as I lost the light so will finish it tomorrow. Unfortunately there's a issue with the mag (5 shot) the first round won't feed, it nose dives but the other 4 feed without any problems, just did some googleising and it's not a uncommon problem with both the Finn fire and quad in 17hmr so will be calling the dealer tomorrow to get that sorted, a little annoyed but life goes on. Apart from that everything else is fine Managed to bag a bunny on the walk back to the house

Adlippy the Sako quad .22 WRM will only load 5 rounds in the mag if it is inserted with the bolt open, otherwise 4 with the bolt closed.
Sandgroper Bill not yet on order will be here after Xmas, should be a lot of fun.

With all my rifles i set up a hi vi's shoot-n-c target at 100m. using a rifle vice or cleaning rest i bore sight it so i can see the hi vi's target and while holding it very still adjust the windage and elevation on to bulls eye. then start shooting adjusting after each three shot group. It works every time for me

Good work mate, always a joy to get a new rifle blooded. How's the feed if only 4 rounds used in the mag? I've got a pistol that holds 9 rounds but when loaded to capacity always jammed the first round. Loading 8 worked fine so after a bit of reading I did a little work on the mag feed lips. Opening the front just a fraction so the projectile sat maybe 1mm higher solved my issue. There's a heap of how-to videos on YouTube on mag tuning that may assisy. Polishing the feed ramp and making sure there's no burrs can't hurt either.

This is tuning a pistol mag but the principles remain the same, check what he says 55 seconds into the clip.

That'll work.

Get on paper close where it's easy to see what's happening then fine tune at distance.

I do 25m / 50m for rimfire and 50m / 100m for centrefire.

I took it back to the Dealer, he did something with the lip on the mag, having a blonde moment and can't remember, all good now feeds the first round, I asked a couple hares tonight what they thought, for some reason they didn't say much, rude buggers!.
