I am only new to shooting, but my guess would be to go along to a range like Eagle Park, Lang Lang rifle club etc and get talking to some of the regulars

BTW... would be interesting to get a low down on what you guys think about which is better... the Savage or the Howa? Are we talking the Axis and 1500?
Zastava .22lr
Howa 1500 .243
Tikka T3x 30-06

I was born with nothing and at 45, I still have most of it left!

Howa model 1500 and savage 10fcp sr to be honest I've had both howa and savage and is buy either again they both have the positives and negatives but the positives definitely out weight the negatives I find the savage fits me better

Depends on what you want to do. You can rock up to most ranges and shoot targets. If it is competition you are interested in there are a few different things you can do.
Benchrest is the Formula 1 of target shooting. Latest hi-tech gear, cutting edge type stuff. Big $$$. There is a benchrest event that you can have a go at with standard hunting rifles, Fly Shooting. Check out their website, www.500mflyshooter.com.au. While you will still see a lot of high-end gear, you can start off with standard gear.
SSAA Rifle Metallic Silhouette is a challenging target discipline that can be shot with standard "out-of-the-box" rifles.
SSAA run a Field Rifle discipline also
F-class Full-bore is another one that may be worth a look at.

Depends on what it is. Club days, usually just rock up on the day. Some competitions require prior nominations, depends on whether they need numbers for catering, squadding etc. Where are you based?

If you want to shoot with a VRA club, I would find out from the VRA who the Captain is and ring him first. BTW, it might be a couple of weeks before they begin shooting and the VRA itself might be closed this coming week but don't give up and Good Luck

If you don't mind the drive considering going up to Bendigo to shoot with the full bore club. You can have a crack at F-open class and get a chance to shoot longer ranges out to 700 and 800

He's right.......kinda ;) The really good gear is expensive. For instance, ammo is no longer free and rifles are no longer 5 quid. But a club would lend you an appropriate rifle for not much money, until you got the hang of things (and the bug  ).

There are still rifles you can pick up to learn on for $5-600. When start getting better and wanting to be in the leaders tanks you will probably want to drop some big bucks. Prediction reloading isn't that cheap to do either.

We shoot f class and every event is scored using a handicap system. We have shooters using all types of gear and all ages. while you are down here you could got tuna fishing!.
