So put some ear muffs on you idiot!

Sorry for a rant so early in the day but here it comes

I was at Little River shooting range on the weekend which if you're not familiar with it has a wide tin roof over it which is great at reflecting sound directly into your brain...

There was a cease fire while everyone's setting up and a pair of guys there waiting for the time to shoot. They were just shooting some rimfire stuff while I was on a .308

Anyway the ceasefire ends and I get back on my bench and let my first shot go.

In the mean time, these two idiots are just dawdling round, no ear muffs, oblivious to the fact that the range is hot again apparently.

After the first shot the guys got a bit of a start and are holding their ears and carrying on. One of them comes over to me and is asking "God, what are you firing in that thing".

I tell him it's just a regular old .308 and he's going on about am I shooting hot loads, or integrated brake or this or that, basically anything that would make it unusually noisy and my fault if I read the guy correctly... :?

Here's a wild idea... When your on a shooting range, put some *&#%$^ earmuffs on

Rant over. Sorry :D

If he keeps turning up with no muffs on he won't have to worry about his hearing soon enough anyway

There are a pair of blokes I see at Little River occasionally who seem to be there to talk instead of shoot, and they get a bit cranking when the noise picks up and they can't hear each other

I am sure you could program the electronic ear muffs to cut out the noise generated by idiots like them!

I bumped into my "friend" from above again on my last visit to the range.

Gave him a friendly reminded to put some ear muffs on when a shoot session started... Got the stink eye for the rest of the day

It always makes me laugh when someone sulks about noise at a shooting range... I will generally shout "Ears" before I start shooting if I am the first person at the range to let a few off...

If I get caught out I usually just think "wanker" then put my ear muffs on..

Yep.

They're an idiot filter as much as a noise filter at the range.

Speak up, I cant hear you.............

I do get caught without my ear protection sometimes - my bluddy fault, as most times I been 'done', is when I'm the RO! Yelling - range open - commence fire & then "oh s**t" where did I leave my muffs, on a bench or in the shed when making a cuppa tea.

Everyone get's caught out from time to time, it's gunna happen...

Some idiots seem to think after the RO announces the range is hot they should have 5 minutes of minutes for chit-chat before firing commences, and they get the s**ts at you for interrupting their conversation

Those are the idiots that get on my nerves...

Does anyone know if soldiers in war wear earmuffs? I'd imagine all the automatic gunfire would hurt your ears but don't they also need to hear out for orders etc

I asked a Vietnam vet yesterday & he said not whilst in action, only on the range. And he was a Kiwi. May have changed since back then.

I would assume if your life was at risk in a war situation I doubt you would be thinking about protecting your hearing.

Plus sound is one of your most useful senses in a combat situation, especially lowlight environments, so it would be silly to reduce it.

I think no for the most part, but at the same time I read there is a thing in the US a while ago about soldiers and ex-soldiers in some class action against the government for loss of hearing and ear damage so...

Yer... Empty a belt from a BMG with no ear muffs on and safe to say you've done yourself some damage I reckon.

Plenty of the WW1 & 2 veterans had a fair bit of hearing loss.

But no need for us to be greatly effected with good PPE now-a-days.

Just need to wear good muffs or plugs as much as we can.

Especially at the range.

I dunno about going back as far as WW2 and further.

I read this so long ago I've forgotten everything about it TBH.

I'm pretty sure it was soldiers in the current US military trying to sue for the hearing damage they sustained.

They might be trying, but they can't win.

Solider's can't sue the military in the US, period. It's come up in the past when people have been injured or died as a result of military base doctor negligence and other circumstances.

People try, they get knocked back, end of story.
