So I went to the range last weekend to have a plink and shakedown a few Milsurps before the Anzac Day competition.
I set up a 350mm square plate made of 10mm mild steel (I get it for free). Plate was set at about 210m (just past the 200m marker, I didn't really measure it).
I then had a shot with
No.4 mk1* .303
174gr fmj with 38.5gr 2208
Est 2400fps
FN M98 Mauser 30-06
150gr fmj with 47.5gr of 2208
Est 2850fps
Henry 45-70
325gr FTX with 50gr of 2207
Est 2000fps
Howa .223
55gr v-max with 25.3gr of BM8208
Est 3200fps
The Howa was scoped but the other three was ol fashioned iron sights
Only did a handful of shots with the .223 for comparison.
5 shots with the Henry (2 sighters to determine range settings)
About 20 shots each from the FN and no4
Results as follows.
Top left 45-70, Bottom left 303, far right 30-06, inner right .223
As you can see the 45-70 sailed through.
.303 packed quite a wollop with a nice divot
30-06 was noticeably less intrusive
.223 barely scratched the paint.
Was my first shot at steel with the 45-70, I was expecting it to really give the plate quite a wack. From the bench I was really disappointed initially as the plate barely moved. On closer inspection it was revealed that it had drilled quite an impressive hole.
I know there is no real revelations here , but it was interesting to see the impacts side by side and the real life results.
