Sounds like a great complex

This is my first post here on this forum, I think I will come out to mudgee for some shooting over this coming year. I find Sydney shooting ranges too focused on competition and there is little opportunity to do and practice or load development

Is there somewhere to stay close to the range?

Thanks

We are all volunteers & from various clubs/associations.

The Complex exists because the land was "excised/excersorised" (something like that) from the catchment for Windamere Dam - to put shooting ranges on back in the 1990's.

We can use the ranges on Saturdays, Sundays, Public Holidays (0900-2200) & Wednesday (afternoon 1200-2200) AND other times if listed on the range calander & the graziers are notified. Everyone has to comply with the 'licence conditions', shoooters & graziers alike.

We can camp on the range, one day prior & one day post notified/listed competition dates, just be self sufficent for food - the water is free (range 2 did taste of drowned rat but I'm used to it now!)

We do have a "Weekender" shoot comming up in January - all welcome. It's 'under the auspices' of the SSAA Mudgee & District Branch, we don't care what your affiliation/association is, as long as you have a firearms licence for what you bring (or in NSW we can do a P650 for). The aim is an enjoyable shooting weekend but safety comes first & be moderatly sensible.

Next forum shoot/weekender is Friday 17th to Sunday 19th Jan. 2014. We have access to range 1 on the Friday, range 1 & 2 & 'sillywet' on the Saturday & range 2 on the Sunday.

No .338Lapua or 50 cal (unforunately the template/danger zone is only 2970m behind the targets), so a max. of 8mm is in place but all "traditional big game rifle" calibres are allowed (just ask first).

The bulls**t starts once you sign in, after the shooting of firearms is done & once the firearms/ammo are properly secured, the other bulls**t shooting tall stories vs beer can commence.

There is no "set - we vill only do this". We try to accomodate whatever the shooters require in the way of distance & target, allowing for the template on the range in use. Tennis balls & a 9mm (even a .22 semi) are fun, as long as you don't shoot "the bluddy fence up". We keep the cattle/stock of the firing line with fences arount the benchs/sheds.

Just out of curiosity, I don't suppose you know how long the danger zone has to be for a .50 cal range?

Is it different for .338 Lap and .50 cal?

Are they still going on with the tikka vs howa crap? We're a lot of threads that are good turn into a tikka/howa debate.

I haven't read it for a while as I said, but when I quit it was the same people sniping at each other.

Same little bitching circles jumping on people for having a different opinion.

I have not done the full calculations for either. From what I have heard (now theres a loaded, hear-say) the .50cal has be done in by the .338Lap due to new projectiles for the .338 which are very slippery. We would be looking at stopping the highway traffic just to take a shot (rough calculactions) because even the .50cal get to 4km with reasonable accuracy.

I suggest you look at the NSW Police Firearms web site, where there is a .pdf wrt: range setup & calculations. If I find it again, I'll post the link.

We've only got 10,000 acres or 4,400 Ha. - it's about 7km or so, at the longest, so we 'ain't gunna get the big stuff', even assuming you could see the target over/through the hills.

Oh ok , some things never change. Might drop in to the range in April. I've got a week long shoot on & haven't decided we're to go yet. Bit cooler that time of year as well.

Five local clubs & a training organisation have their "range time" committen to the Complex & with five distinct ranges, which effectivly have independant 'danger zones'. We 'aint't gunna' chance doing the wrong thing. It's too much to loose for one wrong shot.

The fourth Sunday of the month in April will be your best bet, got our ANZAC shoot on & might have enough RO's to open the 500m 'sillywet' range.
