Shooting at the range with hunting license?

Post by Harts » 22 Jul 2013, 1:03 pm

Hi all,

Reasonably new to shooting here and just wanting to double check before I cock something up :)

I have my cab B license which I got with the reason of hunting, but didn't specify target shooting at the time.

Am I good to go to the range and shoot as is or do a need a membership etc. or amended license to include target shooting as a reason for having my rifle?

Cheers.

Should be all good mate. Membership at ranges is usually for discounted attendance fees or access to club events etc.

Most places will let anyone turn up and have a shoot though.

I know that here in VIC it's fine (just went through this myself recently as I'm new to shooting.)

Reason on my license if for hunting only, not target shooting and I can go to my local SSAA ranges no problem.

Doesn't work the other way round though, if you're license is for target shooting only, you can not go hunting in your state forests etc.

Again this is VIC, but can't see why it would be any different in SA?

Everyone needs somewhere to sight in, right?

I believe that's the case in every state - You can shoot at a range with any license or while under the direct supervision of a licensed shooter if you are unlicensed.

Hunting in any situation though requires the firearm operator to have the appropriate firearms license, game license and any other paperwork/permits required by their states firearms registry or parks/wildlife services.
See you on the firing line.
