Sort of got 2 threads going that reference each other:

Had table 19 :) It was fun, I'd go back.
For a little while I had a guy shooting next to me who was shooting a 204 which had a built in muzzle break, that was kind of annoying.

There's a few new gongs at LR too.
At least one fixed one and one hanging.
Both at 505m.

I take my owns gongs on A-frames as well.
The ROs get a bit nervous as I usually place one at about 100-125m for the 22lr.
Given I'm always up the muzzle brake end with a few big boy guns on the bench as well, they need to make sure I'm not hitting it with a centrefire.

Why can't you shoot it with centrefire?

Centrefire on steel is minimum 200m
Rimfire minimum 50m
Air rifle 25m
It used to be 100m for centrefire but they changed it after the "ricochet" incident.

Thanks Supaduke.
But we can still shoot centrefire steel at 50m in silhouette competition, right?

Yeah this is something I find confusing. Either it's genuinely risky and you shouldn't do it, or it's OK.

There was an incident about a year ago where someone was shooting at steel plates or gongs and some fragments returned and hit him in the face. No major injuries.
Um, I think work safe got involved and the distance rules for that sort of target changed.

Suggest you check their web site for distance details.

It wasn't the actual shooter that got hit.
The shooter was stupidly shooting across the range at someone else's target on quite a steep angle. Fragments hit someone down the other end of the range.

No more star pickets either.

I'll stand corrected. Just heard the story & that was some time ago. I wasn't there. But point being changes to steel targets have been made. Including distances I believe.

they are good story's but in actual fact they don't know how or where the ricochet came from :unknown:
the young bloke was with his mates who were setting up and had not fired a shot, he was at the back of them behind the firing line
he was hit in the chest with something that was not ever found, the closest shooter was about 10 benches from him
lots of bullcrap about the incident by everyone, the ssaa included, he was airlifted to melbourne hospital after a doctor on site checked him out and said he was getting cold and clammy, that apparently indicated internal bleeding although the wound looked exactly like a paintball injury, a circle of grazing
there was no wound apart from grazing in the shape of a circle about the size of a 10 cent piece, very suspicious
the ssaa sent the bill for the helicopter and doctor to the young bloke who's father sought legal advise and it just wasn't heard of again
entry gives insurance whether you are a member or not
the incident gave a very vigorously zealous chief range officer the opportunity to bring in his new safer rules
when I asked him about the 200 meters and why the cowboys can shoot steel at 7 meters his words were "the guys in sub clubs are better shots and are not idiots like on the main range" at that time he was given free run to appease the LRD,
there was a meeting where a very clued in bloke from the military rifle club who had over 35 years experience with designing tanks and dealing with ricochets in the army was a spokes person, after he had his say and left the RO's were told to forget everything he said by the then facility's manager
so there you have it, the cowboys can shoot steel at 7 meters but the public are set at 200 meters
if you ever get the chance go and watch the cowboys, a bit of fun but they have a lot of ricochets at 7 meters

Well there you go. The range officer who told me the story seemed pretty sure of himself. Lies , damn lies and statistics.

they lie to cover themselves and make it look like the club had no option
then they tell you they are there for the shooter
the manager at that time did not want to send the young bloke to hospital, he had had medical training,
but he could not go against a doctor who was there at the time,
the injury looked exactly like these paint ball injuries
http://www.holytaco.com/25-brutal-paintball-injuries/
I'm not sure if its still about but his injury was put on the news if you want to google it

ps I did forget to say that there were no steel targets used or found in front of where this onlooker was apparently ricocheted
the new rules that came in after it were just because you guys on the main range cannot be trusted
the incident happened near the far end past the muzzle brakes
