Dud Round

G'day Gents

I was out hunting over the weekend and lined up my 30-06 at a deer hiding in a ti-tree thicket, pulled the trigger and 'click' - no boom.

I waited 5 seconds, ejected and chambered another round but the deer has spooked and retreated.

When I looked at the round there was a punchmark from the firing pin but the round didn't go off. Is this a round I should throw away/dispose of? or is it safe to try firing again?

Sounds like a dud primer if it has a good indent, give it to a reloader if you're not comfortable with pulling the bullet yourself. It might fire on a 2nd strike but I doubt it.

Weigh it. Then weigh another unfired round and see if there is any difference in the weights. If so, could be a dud primer, could be no powder (doubt it, but you never know), however the weight difference if any, could tell you something. Just a thought.

Is it factory ammo by any chance?

I've had several customers come into the shop with the same issue and on basically every instance we found the offensive cartridge to be on the "short" end.

Short- meaning the shoulders on the cartridge was pushed back below saami spec causing a loose fit in the chamber. You'll see an indentstion from the firing pin but it would not fire.

Weigh the cartridge, if the weight is correct, messure and compare.

I would put a dead primer at the bottom of the pile.

I would try firing it a couple more times. If the indent is light I would try firing it in a couple other rifles if you can. If it still won't fire then I would pull the bullet and dump the powder out.

Over many years I've had a fair few that do that.
A couple years back I had one that did it, but went off when trying the 2nd time with an unusually loud bang & increased recoil.
Since that one,, I don't ever try firing them a second time anymore.

Better to be safe rather than sorry,,,,,,,,,, DISPOSE of it.

But it's also possible it's a problem with the rifle. But first time it has failed. Ammo is usually very reliable.

Possible its dirty bolt/firing pin. Suggest, when you clean the rifle next dismantle the bolt, rinse/wash firing pin and inside the bolt with kerosene or petrol, lightly oil and reassemble.

HI must be lucky never had a factory round not go off ever ..........but in saying that had a couple of my reloads not go bang ,in both incidents after disassembled , and checking I suspect the primers

The shot with the next round after the dud worked fine aswell.

I did do 200 or so dry fires over the last month (15-30 a day, a few times a week) in the lead up to the trip - the manual says it is fine for Xbolt but have been told it can be bad for the firing pin.

(I've owned the rifle since Feb 2024 and it's probably done 120-150 rounds and the 200 recent dry fires.

Generally no issue dry firing centre fire rifles.

No, sorry. Each brand/model is different. Try the manual or youtube. It is usually fairly easy. No need to totally disable. Just remove the FP assembly, wash, oil, reassemble. Just want to be sure its not gummed up with sh1t.

All mine the fireing pin just screws out from the bolt.
