Strictly for hunting or serious LR shooting... 300 WM every time.
Hunting... The huge array of available, economical projectiles, cases, and just the fact that the .30 is more flexible when/if you want to step up to very heavy big game bullets.
Long range precision... Sako TRG 42's don't come in 7mm Rem so i didn't have to ignore that calibre yet gain. And a big thing, where I am and the shops I can get to, 7mm projectile and cases range is limited.
Sure, the numbers touted say the 7mmRM has the edge in drop because for weight the projectiles are smaller diameter so can achieve higher BC, but to solve that in the TRG I use 240 and 250gn Matchkings. I bet apart from a few elevation clicks, there is no benefit to 7mm.
As far as any edge in game goes, there isn't any - exception being big bullets for big animals is better in .30, if you ever get that opportunity.
I think .300WM is that much better for hunting, I have two Sako sporters, and for hilltop to hilltop, another 27" barrel TRG42. All in .300WM.
And just for insanity, I have a lightweight 300RUM too, .30 is so impressive.
There will be plenty who say "but what about the numbers!!!", but I say, come and show my why your 7mm is superior out here across the paddock.
Competition? I have no idea, not the slightest bit interested.
