Is it nostalgia?
30-06 just gets the job done at typical hunting distances with easy to obtain projectiles , powder , cases and primers . big range of projectile weights 110-220gn that work , but soft 165gn boat tail speers would be my choice as a do all load on the central east coast of australia . saw a fella in NT using 180 barnes on scrub bulls, was going for heart shots, and penetrated through 3 pigs in a mob, the first one being a very big sow . 30-06 is a very flexible cartridge . with reasonable recoil in a hunting weight rifle . 308 is at it's best with 150's , 30-06 surpasses this with 165's . bigger boiler room , more oomph
for the game that i hunt 270, 308, 30-06 are all up to the task , with a suitable bullet range to suit the medium game i encounter , with 30-06 having the ability of more flexibility to shoot heavier projectiles well should the need arise .
back on topic , the main reason i went with 7mm rem mag is the same reason i advocate for the 30-06 . bullet weights suit the game i hunt and flexibility in bullet choice. more bullet choice in 30 cal for sure , but there's more than enough 7mm bullets for any job at hand . 7mm has tolerable recoil in a hunting weight rifle, 300 mag goes up a bit in recoil level over the 7mm . it's horses for courses i guess . with correct projectiles for the job at hand there's no bad choice , it's more the application of the chosen rifle with regards to abilities and limitations . real long range shooting with plenty energy , go the win mag with eldx's for good results i guess . pigs, deer , goats out further than a 270 go the 7mm mag. any shot over 200 meters i get more selective, so i don't really need a calibre with more reach than a 308 with a 150 . 30-06 with a 165 gives a bit more authority than the 308 but
ADI load 223, 243 and 308 , boring as bat sh!t , but sane , practical rounds that get the job done for the majority of users . we all like something different and special to play with but

wouldn't be interesting if we stuck to the sane , practical choices . which all boiled down, it's personal choice for personal reasons .
probably doesn't help the OP make a choice , be realistic in what your rifle is going to be used for and choose appropriately i guess
