I am about to buy some of the Aussie made helmar stuff all the reports I've read about it just as good as bote tech half the price

yeah same here with the bore tech . i've never had the inclination to leave any solvent in my barrels . they get patched out after cleaning with shellite , allowed to dry for a hour , then patched out with ballistol oil. never had a issue and the bore tech seems to work great . i'll be interested to hear how the helmar goes .

#9 is about all I will leave in a barrel overnight, sometimes a few days.
All the miracle cleaners get cleaned out after they do their thing.

I could hardly believe my eyes, when they said you can leave Patch-out in a barrel as a protectant.
The stuff smells like death, and your not meant to breathe it.

The Hrdy blokes like Boretech for their own health, but still finish with a couple of patches with a cleaning spirit.

My Wetherby barrel was always a tack-driver, but must be rough, as I tried to get a clean white patch once.
No chance, and I must have used about 40 patches, both sides=80 FFS
Just an oddball, and my other blue Howa barrel is not that bad.
Just carbon, black patches forever.

It will still be a while as I only clean when accuracy drops off .

takes ages to get carbon out hey . after i notice my patches coming out with less copper , i use a nylon brush . i push it through from the chamber end , unscrew , and push it down a second time then patch again with more solvent . with the bore tech i don't both alternating with clean patches until when i've got all the copper and most of the carbon out . seems to clean up quicker with a lot less patches using this method . i'm not going to say it's "the right way" , it's just what works for me . generally i steer well clear of "scrubbing" my barrels with a brush , but pushing the brush through seems to dislodge the carbon and get the barrel cleaner quicker without using heaps of patches. i thought it relevant to mention when you described using a lot of patches to get rid of the carbon. hope you find this useful . cheers

Yeah, it's just that particular carbon steel barrel, and stainless ones do seem easier to clean.
When I tried to keep going and get it clean a couple of times, I noticed that when I thought it was looking better on the patches and I tried any different solvent, whether a spirit, Windex, or anything else, that barrel would just send a black patch out.

Being a tight-ass and cringing when I see blokes pouring their exy solvents all over the floor, I always do that re-activate the Boretech thing with a nylon brush after the 10 or 15 min soak. It's like a freebie.

I should really go back to scrubbing with the bronze brushes in that barrel, as it's really the only way to clean sometimes, and not like a bronze brush can damage hard barrel steel.

The reason I clean after any shooting, (Maint cleaning) is because carbon, and copper are so damd hard to clean.
I never want to get to the carbon ring stage and have to clean it.

I also never get to the accuracy dropping off stage.
It would just take too long to clean rifles if they were that bad.

An abrasive polish like JB bore paste is about the only way to remove a carbon ring if you let it get that far.
I bought a can, as it should be the correct grit for what we are doing.

Metal polishes ain't metal polishes; Autosol is fairly abrasive, and I use it as a rougher, then the McGires fine stuff as a finish polish, when doing a bike wheel or part.
That is using rags and hand tools.
On a buffer wheel, I use the proper wax-like blocks. They also have a rough and fine; the white one is the finer.

It can't hurt to polish a rifle bore, but what the borescope taught me is how easily bits of the paste can be left in there.
Again, a thorough spirit clean is the answer.

You can get a very shiny-looking barrel with just the modern cleaners and patches, but it will still have some copper laid in there, so not often will I need to use the JB paste.

I don't even know how bad a barrel looks if it starts to shoot poorly, as I have never let them get that far.
That's when blokes likely need bore paste-type results.

As Wapiti has said,, "Nope there's no such thing as spontaneously rusting steel"

But no matter what angle you look at this from,, you cannot escape the simple facts (as per the OP)

1) It was a brand new HOWA rifle.
2) It's only ever had PPU through it.
3) He has two other HOWAS that have also only ever had PPU ammo through them.
4) All three rifles have been treated the same way ie: care and cleaning

5) Only the one rifle has had the issue of rust/corrosion in the barrel.

You don't have to be Albert Einstein to figure out where the problem lies, whatever has caused it.

Taking the above into consideration, NORMAL barrel steel doesn't react in this way.
I do not fear death itself... Only its inopportune timing!
And,,,,It's been proven,,,,, the most trustworthy females in my entire life were all canines.
