I took my mates 7mm Rem Mag out for a few shots yesterday. It's a shorter weight with a hard rubber pad on the back. After 10 shots recoil was not unbearable but unpleasant. Later on I had a couple shots out of my Steyr 8x56r. After about the 5th shot I was thinking "this is stinging a bit more than I remember"

Had a look under my shirt and it seems the 7mm had given me a good bruise and the metal buttplate on the Steyr had torn it open a bit


It looks a fair but angrier in real life, I think the flash on the camera washed it out a little.

So now I'm in the market for a slip on butt pad

well it wasn't there before I shot the rifle so I'm putting it down to that either way

Muzzle brakes are fairly cheap...nothing wrong with using them. I've got one for my .30-06 and a Limbsaver...turns it into a pussy.

Interarms Mk X. Basically a mauser action with a really light profile barrel

Muzzle brakes are fairly cheap...nothing wrong with using them. I've got one for my .30-06 and a Limbsaver...turns it into a pussy.

The 7mm isn't mine so not my place to put a brake on and the Steyr is a hundred year old straight pull service rifle, a muzzle brake would look absurd

They work a treat.

For all the things I like about my Ruger, the factory recoil pad is undeniably crap.

Only take a few shots to earn a few bruised lines. Chucked on the the limbsaver and it made the .308 feel easier than shooting a .243 in the same rifle with the factory pad.

.30 calibre without a recoil pad must be a doozy?

I've fallen into the trap of being under attired on a warm day... tshirt or generally thin clothes are not advisable when going to boomer town....

Maybe someone needs to teach you to shoot Baldrick...

I've never had a problem with it in the past. I shall with a 303 the recoil is appreciable but not bad enough to make you shy away from it. Obviously would be less with a soft pad though

Yeah it was shooting off a bench and yeah I was only wearing a T shirt so maybe I should have brought a little extra padding. Maybe I'll only shoot the Steyr in winter when I can wear a jacket

I guess you're comparing to .308 Winchester? They're similar, but not the same. .303 British has noticeably less recoil.

The SMLE is a heavy rifle compared to most modern sporters too which soaks up the recoil.

It's not bad.

it doesn't normally knock me around that much. I'm just starting casting lead projectiles for this rifle so I'm gonna try and do a reduced load
