Back in the game

G'day,
I'm just getting back into hunting and shooting after a fairly lengthy absence. I'm in the process of jumping through all the hoops required by NSW law and have pretty much made up my mind as to the gear I'll be getting. Step one will be a hunting rifle, and that will be a Howa 1500 in 308Win. The rifle will be blued and have a Hogue stock. The second purchase will be another Howa but this time in 223 Rem. IT will be one of the heavy barrel rifle and will be mainly used for target shooting and light game.
I first joined the SSAA back in the early 1960's while the old Balkham Hills range was still going then it all moved to Silverdale. I had a look at this site and it looked pretty good to me. Look forward to some good discussions.

Probably close to 40 years mate, just got too busy working and raising kids. Some things have changed a lot, others pretty much the same.

At the moment I'm tossing up whether to put Redfield or Leopold scopes on those rifles. I used to be a big Bausch and Lomb fan but I'm pretty sure those days are gone.

From what I've seen of the Redfield scopes they seem to be high quality for pretty cheap. Very Clear optics. Leupold speaks for itself, I use them on 2 of my rifles and that's what I'll be putting on my next rifle too.

I don't know about that mate, you get a big Cod on the line and it's all hands on deck. It's all hunting just a different style

Mate, with Christmas and all I can't see me firing a round before late Feb. By then I'll be ready to get the second rifle so I'm OK with the process. Having a morning on the range at Casino tomorrow with the local SSAA pres. He's a nice bloke, as are most of us.

I reckon that I've gone back to being a kid just before Christmas, thought it would never come. Back in the old days you'd just walk into the shop and say "I'll have that one." Pay the man and head for the nearest range. My how things have changed. Why is it every time I hear one of the Greens open their gob I have to rush out and kick something?
