first rifle... (s)

Post by petemacsydney » 01 Jan 2014, 10:16 am

Hi all, noob here...
Just finalizing my first rifle selection and thought I'd see what people have to say about them..
Any and all thoughts welcome, as my experience is limited!!!!
Savage mk2 TR .22LR with Niko sterling night eater (3-9x50 I think)
Tikka T3 in .270 lite with Bushnell 6500 elite 4.5-30 x50
Primary desire is hunting, but will be spending a lot of time at the range to improve accuracy first. Accuracy is reasonably good so far though :D
Any pro/cons/thoughts??
Cheers p

Actually might replace Nikko selection with a Nikko Nighteater 4-16x50 LRX

.270 is a perfectly find hunting cartridge. That will take anything up to and including Sambar for you.

One of the flatter shooting game cartridges too.

You're going to use that 22LR for varminting/bench right? I'd put a higher zoom scope on that myself.

I like a bit of zoom on my varminter too.

Whatever your preference mate, but that sounds better to me than a 3-9x.

3-9x isn't enough for my liking, just my personal preference though.

Nothing wrong with the .270 for hunting.

Tikka is a decent rifle too. With a bit of ammo tuning they all shoot real well.

Monster scope you're getting on that thing too.

I've got the same scope on my .308 and love it.

Plenty of people will tell you that you don't "need" that much zoom, but I find it useful. I don't know what peoples phobia of a scope with extra zoom is

4.5x is a plenty wide field of view for hunting, and if you want to switch to long range target shooting or whatever you've got the 30x ready there.

Better to have it and not need it than vice versa, and it's top quality glass anyway.

Thumbs up from me.

Why in gods name will you need a 4-16 on a .22 for hunting? If your only going to sight in at a range there is no point. The average shots you will take are generally between 10-50m! If you go with a higher power I can guarantee being a novice your not going to hit much at closer ranges. Just keep it simple

Nothing wrong with extra zoom. No harm done if it doesn't get used.

Extra zoom , extra weight , extra size , also equals extra money

I have a Leupold 6x42 on my CZ , a 4x Bushnell on my Sportco and opens on the Lithgow

IMO 3-9 x40 is plenty on a .22 unless its used mostly at the range

But what ever you get have fun mate

Not sure it will stop anything given its a range finder!

For stopping power, maybe I should try this

The problem is not the upperend of the zoom but the lower end that is sacrificed. With a .22LR I find my 3-10x42 ideal for SSAA field rifle and it sits on the 3x when hunting unsupported. You really need field of view with a hunting .22.

No scope will ever do both bench and hunting well one or the other will always suffer.

I don't want to speak for Warrigul because he really talks some sense . But what he means is the higher the magnification the less field of view you have
say 11m at 100m on 3x down to 4.5m at 9x (field of view is the width you can see through the scope) . Also higher magnification while shooting unsupported
will show every wobble to the extent you probably wont get the shot off from fear of missing . I hope I have explained this clearly I'm not real good on the word machine

OK, thx.. I think I know what u mean. I fly fpv (drone aircraft) so I can appreciate the value and tendencies of fov. Although I can't say I have experienced what u r saying for scopes yet as I just haven't had the in-time on rifle scopes yet.

I think I need more experience to appreciate the downsides u talk about.

As you shoot your own rifle and use mates rifles or one from guys at the range and so on you get a feel for the differences and subtleties of it all.

You're starting off with some top gear though, I'm sure you'll be fine.
