Remington 700 SPS Tactical and a Tikka light are just about polar opposites mate.

What the primary purpose here? Bench or Sporter?

The SPS Tactical is supposedly Remington's most accurate rifle at 100m if that helps your decision.

Has 1:9 twist which will let you do up to maybe 70gr pills.

Twist as you know is everything for stabalising heavier pills.

Just throwing this in the mix, but I think you'll find the Savage Model 12 comes in 1:9 or 1:7 if you wanna shoot the heaviest stuff,

I guess that was meant to say or a Howa?

If right, I think you'll find the Howa .223 are 1:12 twist which won't shoot heavy pills.

Forgot to say,

Tikka Lite .223 Rem twist is 1:8 though...

So that's a possibility for you.

Weatherby Vanguard is 1:12 twist too so I'd rule that how for heavy pills.

If you're shooting heavy pills for targets, Remington 700 SPS would be top of my list from what you've listed there.

1:7 Savage will do the heaviest for you.

Otherwise another vote for the 700 SPS Tactical.

Howa, Remington and Tikka are reputable brands. Sako, Howa, Weatherby and savage are all made in the same factory now with Aako and Howa being their main brands.

I've owned Remington's and they're good.

A faster twist won't typically stop you from shooting lighter pills.

Twists are usually optimised for a certain bullet weight. e.g. the .223 was originally intended to shoot 50gr (or thereabouts) pills for which 1:12 twist is optimal, this is why so many come in 1:12 twist.

If you went with a 1:9 twist like the Remingon and were shooting 70gr as your "regular" load, there shouldn't be any reason you couldn't also shoot 65, 60, 55 or whatever... You'd need to load test to find an accurate load for your rifle, but it should be fine.

You typically only have problems with pills being too light when you're shooting a bad combination or really light pills, in a really fast twist, with a really fast load. Then you can have problems with bullets deforming or coming apart under the stress.
See you on the firing line.

Some great info here. As I'm new to the forum and have been lurking, I am unsure about how welcome I'll be to chime in, but I'll give it a whirl. ;) I am looking at a Sako 85 Varmint with a 24' s/s fluted barrel in a 1:8 twist rate. I think that might be a nice (sweet spot) .223 for both target and varmint hunting. Don't know if you're looking at Sakos, but thought I'd throw that one in the ring for consideration.

I'm in same boat (lurking)... just trying to sponge up some knowledge (being a noob its really important).

I've been in other hobby threads where newbies are less welcome, but looks like shooting is more welcoming.

Anybody got advice on 223 vs 243 vs 270?

I'm after target, but more so game (vermin) at goat or medium boar size..... maybe I'm in wrong thread...

Anyway, looks like an OK forum so far.

Cheers and happy shooting!!

Sadly mate there are still plenty of know-it-alls who apparently have nothing better to do than jump on new shooters for asking perfectly reasonable questions.

We do our best to keep them out of this particular shooting forum though.

If you're going to be carrying it around I'd get down to a store and feel the weight of a few things before making your mind up.

You might find that carrying something like the SPS tactical around is heavier than you expect.

I did that years ago.

Thought "yeah, I'll be able to carry one of those round for a few hours no worries".

A Tikka with1 in 8 twist is bloody hard to go past for the money. My mates one drives 65 grn pills way out past 500 m pretty damn accurately. I use a howa 1 in 12 heavy barrel that shoots 50-55grn projectiles super sccurately and flat to 200, super accurately out to 300 and good enough to 400 on a very still cool day. Any breeze though and it pushes the 50 grn pills around a fair bit after 200m

If you're thinking about the Tactical then weight is either not a problem or you've been giving the Weet Bix a good going over. I've made my decision on a 223 and it will be the Howa Varminter 24inch barrel and a Hogue stock. I don't plan on carrying it very far though. It will be mounted with a 4-12x40 Redfield and see a fair bit of bench shooting with some fox hunting. (I sit there and wait for them to come to me.) I also have a mate with a dog problem on his place. When we talk about long range shooting it's probably a good idea to get a look at exactly how far 300 yards is. It's a long way and there could be more than one change of wind direction in all those yards. The 223 was originally designed to shoot a 50-55 grain projectile, and that will be what I'll shoot.

I always have a bit of a chuckle when someone who's never shot before starts a topic like "So I'm going to start shooting soon and will be doing 1,000m target shooting, what should I get... blah blah blah".

First thing they should get is some experience behind a rifle at 200m so they realise that they're going to be totally useless at 1,000m without a lot of practice
