Just out of interests sake, anyone know of any gunsmiths who can do the conversion of a Marlin 1895 to 50 Alaskan, and how much it costs ?

I am guessing you would need to open up the extractor for the rather large rim and a new 510 bore barrel. Would a 50-70 or 50-120 if you are keen do the same job with less gunsmithing?

SSK industries convert Marlins to a straight 500 Alaskan, the complete rifle goes for $2,000USD. Perhaps get conversion parts from them. A friend has a 50 B&M from SSK and it is very well put together.

It's hard to figure out what itch you are trying to scratch.
Looked at rationally the 500 Alaskan offers nothing over a 45/70 other than an owner basking in the glory of owning that particular rifle.
I don't really see a .5" hole in game offering a huge gain over a .45" hole.
As the Marlin has relatively little metal over the chamber and receiver thread, as well as increased bolt thrust, then there are further constraints over operating pressures which serve to limit performance.
Add to that the likelihood of scarce availability of 500 Alaskan brass which also extends to the parent .348 Win case, from which it can be formed.

Tony Roberts and his son David would do the job
Tony is a gunsmith/dealer in Carpendeit near Colac
I wouldn't like to speculate on the price
ph 03 52352502
very very good work at a reasonable price
and they both build and shoot big bores

Cheers marksman.
I double checked the specs in the ADI manual. It drives a 525gn projectile at least as fast as a 45/70 drives a 400gn projectile at lever action pressures.
So yeah,they're practically identical
