I was using Hoppes 9 for a long time on all of my firearms but feel like it's a bit of a rip off at $13 for 5 oz. Most common solvents and oils are very cheap to buy locally. There is a recipe for "Eds Red" in the web. Has anyone tried it?

Probably designed to be that way.
I shoot with a few guys who like to leave a little copper in their barrels to keep them 'normal' so when they go out next they don't have to waste any shots brining the barrel back up to it's steady fouling level for consistent groups.
