Home made solvent recipe, do you have one?

Post by Oldbloke » 06 Jan 2014, 8:04 pm

Has anyone tried any home made solvents recipes or alternatives that they would be happy to share? I was using Hoppes 9 for a long time on all of my firearms but feel like it's a bit of a rip off at $13 for 5 oz. Most common solvents and oils are very cheap to buy locally. There is a recipe for "Eds Red" in the web. Has anyone tried it?

$13, how long does it last? How much are your guns worth?

He seen it in a mag I've just read I would say. I think sweets is a little more expensive than that but it's the best I've ever used. I don't know what the value of a persons equipment has to do with it but I use it on $5500 rifles down to $480. Works well

AlI was trying to convey is, I wouldn't be saving a few pennies if it meant I was putting the health of my equipment at risk.

The Ed's Red is more like a powder remover. I got an email about it from a mate of mine. In the email it had a whole speel on it. From reading that it seems like the kind of cleaner you use on pistols or rifle firing lead loads. It says it will remove some copper fouling but isn't really designed to so you'd still need a copper remover. Still, it's cheap enough to make and it would probably cut down on how much hoppes you have to use so it might be worth a shot

Probably designed to be that way.

I shoot with a few guys who like to leave a little copper in their barrels to keep them 'normal' so when they go out next they don't have to waste any shots brining the barrel back up to it's steady fouling level for consistent groups.

I understand the theory but I'd be wary of doing it, copper in your barrel will eventually cause rust/ pitting

I know a couple of guys who do the same, but do still give it a really thorough clean every 1/3 cleans or 1/5 or whatever to prevent damage.

That's their theory anyway, I just clean completely every time.

If you use sweets don't leave it in for more than 5m.

Hey mate,

i wouldn't bother with any home made concoctions at the risk of damaging my own gear.

When you say you are using hoppes no 9 you understand that its primarily a powder/carbon solvent? There is also a copper solvent made by hoppes called Benchrest which will remove copper fouling more effectively. It like sweets contains ammonia.

sweets 7.62 copper solvent will not in to my knowledge remove copper effectively after a couple of minutes, I have been told by well regarded benchrest shooter that the chemical reaction between the ammonia and the copper takes at least 13 mins (at which point the reaction creates small bubbles and makes it foamy)

you must remove these solvents with dry patches then neutralize the reaction with alcohol like metho or shellite before 20 mins when it begins to damage the barrel itself.

I've moved away from these stinky chemicals now and use boretech products which are as effective but will not stick out the shed now will they damage the barrel. The boretech eliminator can be left in the bore as a protectant

As for expense, buy the biggest bottle you can, the tiny bottles are some 2 times the price per liter of a big bottle

Hi there. I use pro shot. I have tried hoppes. Sweets stinks and found was no good. Put it this way I bought a 2506. Previous owner used hoppes. Clean after every outing . Was very particular. Took it home found that it was extremely dirty. Took me 8 hrs to clean and found pro shot was the one which moved the most of everything. And u can leave it in ur barrel.
