Mauser M98 ID?

Post by Homer » 16 Jul 2018, 2:47 pm

G'Day Fella's,

I recently put the below large ring Mauser model 1898 (in 8x57 Mauser) on the books.
The owner doesn't know what it is, and going on the markings, I assume it may be a Turkish model, but it is different to other Turkish 98's I've seen.
So, if there are any knowledgeable people out there, I would appreciate any help or advice as to what model this one is.

Please note, the wrap around bolt stop/release.

It has a 29" barrel, and an unmolested/straight bolt handle.

G'day Homer, Turk Model 1903, originally in 7.65x53 (same as the Argentine Mausers) and converted in Ankara to 8x57 in 1937. These rifles very seldom shoot 198g BT projectiles very well but love 150g FB. Cheers.

They were made at Oberndorf but carry no markings, leading many to believe that they were of Turkish manufacture. David.

My Turk is the same except it was converted in '38, and has been cut to a 570mm barrel.

G'Day Fella's,

Thank You to you all for the info you provided, Very Much Appreciated.

I also found out, that whilst it is a Large Ring 98, apparently it has a Small Ring barrel tenon.

Best regards

I just got off the phone with Astrid of AV Ballistics. I happened to mention that I thought identifying Mosins was complicated until I bought a Turk Mauser and set him off :-)
He reminded me of a Turk survey he's been running since 2002.
