Chiappa double badger

Post by bigpete » 28 Jul 2018, 8:14 am

Ok,so I've had a hankering for a combination gun for years,in 410/22,but it seemed like most of the ones for sale were butt ugly tacticool plastic crap. Then I found out about the double badger. Don't know how it slipped under my radar but it did. So a call to my lgs a month ago,and a lot of stuffing around with Raytrade ( amazing how quickly they can send something when you contact them direct ) and my gun arrived Thursday.
First impressions.
It's a neat little thing. Really short but the stock is made for an adult. The lever that opens it,which is formed by the trigger guard and gives it a ruger no.1 look,is kinda floppy but actually needs a bit of oomph at the last bit of travel to actually open it.
It's kinda heavy for its size, they say its 5.8lb,and I'd believe them. It balances nearly on the hinge pin which is nice. Handles nicely too.
The front trigger that operates the lower 410 barrel is actually very good and breaks cleanly and fairly light. The rear trigger fires the upper 22 barrel and has a mile of creep and breaks a bit heavier which is disappointing.
The sights are fibre optic ghost ring style and are far too coarse imo for accurate shooting of the 22 barrel. You can remove the rear sight and use the tiny rail provided to mount a scope, which is what I will do. I did mount my Leopold vx3 1.5-5x20 on it briefly but I need different rings to make it work,a d it added weight.
I have shot it a little bit. Not enough to form much of an opinion other than I'd not use the shotgun past 25m. Its claimed a couple of starlings and I put down a sheep at work with a 410 slug.
It folds in half, which is very handy.
More pictures and reviews to come today.....

I reckon you'll like that Pete, I've become quite a fan of my combination savage. Mine is a cylinder bore so the shot pattern opens up really quick but it runs solids really well.

Ok,so I tested s**t out of it today.
Winchester 3" slugs were abysmal.
Eley 2.5 no.6 shot was great.
Winchester 22 PowerPoint was awesome.
Winchester long z was awesome.
Old Stirling high velocity was ok.
Only shot at 25m but the sights are not real good for fine shooting

I believe it's meant to be improved cylinder.
Local shop only has 3" 410 slugs

After seeing your first post I YouTube’d the ****** out of it and was rather impressed, I’ve been wanting something like this for the kids to start out on but like you I somehow never came across it. What’s the length of pull like BP?

You'd need to. My lads 7 and a big boy and it would need 4" lopped off to be comfortable for him I'd reckon.

If you want a wood stock have a look at the savage model 24. Mines a synthetic stock model 42. Not everyones cup of tea but I bought it second hand as rifle for my 11 year old to be able to use. Fits him well and its easy to use.

Pretty cool rig you got there! Wasn't aware chiappa came out with a wood stocked variant, all the one's I've seen at gunshops (I've seen one lol) and online have been the wire stock version. Thanks for sharing, has certainly peaked my interest in one.

Just to revive this thread.. I saw today that Chiappa have released a Double Badger in 243/410. Don’t know if or when it might be available here in Australia. But if it does hit our shores I’d sure like to get my hands on one.!

I wouldn't buy one now. I ended up returning this one and getting my money back and would not recommend anyone buying one

Why is that BP?

That’s no good bigpete. I’m keen on some sort of a centrefire single shot, and this under and over in 243 sounded good to me. A single shot Henry would be my first choice, but apparently they aren’t imported to Australia.

Why is that BP?

For starters, the chamber of the 410 barrel was offset to the barrel by a considerable amount,a fact that was confirmed by 2 independent sources in 2 different states, and by the rep,to be normal for the 410....very poor.

Secondly,a week after buying it the front optic fibre fell out....

Thirdly, and the worst thing, within a month of owning it,the top of the 22 barrel firing pin had been chewed off because it sometimes wouldn't retract properly and the extractor would hit it as you closed the gun. It got to the point it wouldn't fire 22 rounds coz the firing pin hit to far inside the rim. When I took it back not only was I told I wasn't operating it properly ( load of horse s**t ) but I was also told that they could fix it,or replace it,but if it happened again they wouldn't honour the warranty. And the only way I could ensure it not happening again was to modify the extractor...voiding the warranty anyway. And a quick search of the net showed that the problem wasn't unknown....so when I got the chance to get my money back I leaped at it !
Also, the twin triggers thing was a bit dangerous to me. Twice I fired a 22 round into the air simply because I'm used to a double barrel shotgun and hitting that second trigger when the first shot misses....user error I know, but still....

That's f***ed Pete!

I watched this thread intently when you started it last year cause I was considering the same gun.
Ended up "cheaping out" on a used Savage 24 in.22 over 20g @ $350.

I couldn't be happier with it. Regulation is close enough that I could set the open sights to be a shade left, and a shade low on the 22 with the 20g right and high to the same (very minor) degree.

Looking at it now the free floating firing pins are probably prone to the exact same failure. The transferring dealer didn't warn me about that specific issue but did warn me never to dry fire it (over and above the normal rim fire dry fire proscription) because new firing pins are like hens teeth. I'm gonna be bloody careful from here on in.
